NEW ORLEANS – For the first time in program history, Tulane cross country will be hosting its conference championship on Thursday morning.
The Green Wave will have a home-course advantage for the American Athletic Conference Championships, held at The Golf Club at Audubon Park starting at 8 a.m. Thursday will also mark the first time Tulane has hosted a meet at Audubon Park.
The best runners from The American will converge in New Orleans for a women's 6K championship race at 8 a.m. followed by a men's 8K championship race at 8:50 a.m.
Live results for the race will be available online and live video will also be streamed through the American Digital Network.
For the men, Tulane senior Emmanuel Rotich will be looking to defend his title from 2017. Last year, he beat out Houston's Brian Barraza for first place by eight seconds for the conference championship. The Tulane men finished in seventh last season as a team, and Tulsa won the team championship. In 2016, the Green Wave took second place as a team with Rotich claiming third overall as an individual.
The Green Wave women came in fifth place as a unit last year with Lauren Bartels earning All-Conference honors by finishing in fifth as an individual. Emma Newton was also in the top 20, taking 19th place. UConn was the women's team champion last year.
While no team in the conference is ranked nationally this season, many squads in The American find themselves high up in the regional polls. For the men, Tulsa is No. 3 in the Midwest Region, Temple is No. 7 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, UConn is No. 11 in the Northeast Region, Tulane is No. 14 in the South Central Region and Memphis is No. 15 in the South Region.
On the women's side, SMU is No. 3 in the South Central Region, Temple is No. 7 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Tulsa is No. 11 in the Midwest Region, Wichita State is No. 12 in the Midwest Region and Houston is No. 14 in the South Central Region.
So far this season, Tulane's men have posted three winners so far this year with Carlos Zervigon winning the opener at Nicholls, Evans Kipchumba claiming the crown at the LSU Invitational and Emmanuel Rotich taking the title at the Texas A&M Invitational three weeks ago in his first race of the season. Rotich also had a top-40 finish at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals on October 13.
On the women's side, Mckenzie Melius won the Nicholls Invitational to start the year and helped the team to a first-place finish in that meet. The women have since taken fourth place at the LSU Invitational, 11th at the Texas A&M Invitational and 35th at the Wisconsin Pre-Nats.
Following Thursday's big race, Tulane will continue the postseason when it travels to College Station, Texas, on November 9 for the NCAA South Central Regional Race.
