Men’s Basketball Takes Down Loyola-New Orleans in Exhibition
Nov 1, 2018 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Four Green Wave players scored in double figures, led by Caleb Daniels' double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, as the Tulane men's basketball team defeated Freret Street neighbor Loyola-New Orleans, 85-74, in a preseason exhibition Thursday evening at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Daniels and Samir Sehic each tallied 17 points, while Moses Wood added 14 and Connor Crabtree chipped in 11 off the bench.
Zach Wrightsil led Loyola with a game-high 22 points and Myles Burns compiled a double-double of his own with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
"I am a little disappointed in how they played," head coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr., said. "I thought we started the game the way we wanted to start the game out, but turnovers and offensive rebounds are a bad combination to have a bad nights with, which leads to easy opportunity points for the other team."
The Green Wave blitzed the Wolf Pack from the jump, ripping off an 8-0 scoring run in the first 98 seconds of the game that was capped by five consecutive points by Zhang. Tulane stretched the lead to as many as 14 with the score 21-7 and 10:41 remaining, but that was when Loyola roared back.
Trailing 30-17 with 6:24 left in the first half, the Wolf Pack used 11-straight points down to the 2:20 mark to cut the deficit to two, 30-28. Loyola drew as close as one point after a three-point play by Myles Burns with 1:08 to go made it 31-30.
Consecutive baskets inside the final minute consisting of a layup by Shakwon Barrett and a trey by Connor Crabtree helped the Wave take a 37-34 edge into halftime.
Tulane jumpstarted the second half much like it did the first, exploding for seven straight points – all courtesy of Sehic and Daniels to extend the advantage back to double figures, 44-34, just 76 seconds into the period.
Loyola had one more scoring surge left in its tank however, closing within one point one more time, 50-49, after a 3-point by Trey LaForge with 13:23 remaining.
The Green Wave never surrendered the lead for the duration of the night, and pushed the advantage back to double digits, 75-64, on a coast-to-coast layup by Shakwon Barrett with under five minutes left. The Wolf Pack got back to within six points with 2:39 to go, but a 7-2 scoring edge over the next two minutes sealed the 11-point triumph.
Tulane has 10 days before tipping off the 2018-19 regular season at home on Sunday, Nov. 11 against Florida State. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT), and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
