NEW ORLEANS – A two-time state champion from the state of Florida, Amelia Vasquez has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to join the Tulane bowling program head coach Hayley Veitch announced on Wednesday.
Vasquez, a native of Oviedo, Florida, won back-to-back state championships as a member of the Oviedo High School Lions during her sophomore and junior seasons. Her team finished third at the most recent state championships, and throughout her four-year career has never finished lower than third at the state tournament, sporting a 64-0 record during the regular season.
"Amelia will be a key addition to continue the growth of the team next year," Veitch said. "Amelia has excelled in both the classroom and on the lanes which makes her an ideal fit for Tulane and the athletic department."
Over the summer, Vasquez finished tied for 17th place at the U.S. High School Bowling Championships in Illinois, as her team finished 11th in the country. Her highest placing at the national tournament was as a freshman where she placed 10th individually, with a team placing of fifth, recently bowling a high series of 743.
The first team all-conference selection back in 2015, Vasquez earned a top 60 finish at the 2018 Junior Gold Championships last summer. In a field of 856 in her division, Vasquez improved from her finish of 239 a year ago, up to 59 in 2018.
"Amelia has been blessed two have had some superb coaching in high school, so she will be able to bring that experience with her," Veitch said. "Amelia has a bubbly and confident personality which mixes well with our team dynamic. I am looking forward to having Amelia here in the fall."
