NEW ORLEANS - With the 2018 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on the horizon, Tulane track and field wraps up the indoor regular season Friday, making its way to Baton Rouge to compete at the LSU Twilight Invitational. Field events begin at 2:15 p.m. while running events start at 3:55 p.m. from inside the Carl Maddox Field House.
ABOUT THE MEET
Tulane athletes will compete in nine total track and field events, including the women's 200m, 400m and 800m dash, women's one mile run, women's 3000m run, women's high jump, women's pole vault, women's triple jump and women's weight throw.
"This is the final regular season meet on our schedule, and we're using this as an opportunity to give our athletes a chance to sharpen up for the conference championship," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Eric Peterson said. "The pole vaulters and jumpers are going at full strength and we've got some of the sprinters, but it's a judgment call in terms of which individuals need to continue to work to better prepare for next weekend."
Last year at LSU Twilight, the Green Wave closed out the indoor regular season in style, coming away with nine personal bests and 15 top-five finishes. Then-redshirt sophomore Emma Newton earned a gold-medal finish after posting a time of 10:10.51 in the 3,000 meter while then-sophomore Jessica Duckett, who will not compete this Friday, set the previous school record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.46. Duckett topped that time last weekend in New Mexico, breaking her own school record in the 60m hurdles with a 8.36 performance.
"Like last year, our expectations for good performances are still really high, and we expect to go there and compete really well," Peterson said. "You expect that at this time of the year because we're peaking a little bit ahead of the championship, so when the kids are competing, there's always that opportunity for a breakout performance or improvement. We expect to see that tomorrow."
LAST TIME OUT
Duckett set the new school record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.36 in day two of the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., last weekend, topping the previous program best of 8.44, which she recorded last year at the LSU Twilight Invitational.
Duckett posted a time of 8.52 in the semi-finals to qualify for the 60m hurdles finals, where she then broke the school record en route to a fourth-place finish. With the time of 8.36, Duckett sits in second place in The American women's 60m hurdles performance list heading into the conference championship.
North of New Mexico, junior Emmanuel Rotich competed at the Husky Classic in Seattle, finishing 35th in the 5000m with a time of 14:15.52. Across the country in Massachusetts, redshirt juniors Emma Newton and Lauren Bartels ran in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University. Newton recorded a time of 9:55.87 in the 3000m while Bartels set a new personal best in the 5000m, running to a 10th place finish in 17:04.43.
