SFA Stormin' Ladyjacks Classic Final ResultsÂ
HOUSTON – Junior Tiera Gulum topped the individual standings with a 229.40 pin average to earn tournament MVP honors, and Tulane bowling placed seventh at the Stephen F. Austin Stormin' Ladyjacks Classic at Copperfield Bowl.
Â
The Green Wave posted a 7-6 record, 13,232 total pins and a 194.6 pin average in the tournament. In bracket play on Sunday, the Wave concluded the tournament with a 4-2 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater to rebound from 4-2 defeats to No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 8 Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Â
Gulum totaled 1,147 pins in five traditional matches on Saturday, beating Kelly Belzeski of Nebraska by one pin to win the individual medalist honors. Gulum posted game scores of 257-211-246-195-238 to pace the Wave.
Â
"I am very happy for Tiera and her outstanding individual performance," Tulane head coach Hayley Veitch said. "She threw the ball really consistently and was a vital leadoff bowler for our team."
Â
Tulane posted 3-2 team records on both Friday and Saturday, totaling 9,797 pins to sit in sixth place after two days of competition. In Baker play Friday, the Green Wave topped No. 18 Duquesne 923-923 (104-100), No. 11 Adelphi 1,031-895 and No. 16 LIU-Brooklyn 1,000-923. In traditional play Saturday, the Wave defeated No. 13 UAB 954-939, No. 22 Maryville 1,029-992 and St. Francis (N.Y.) 990-845.
Â
"Although we finished a respectable seventh, we had opportunities to win matches against higher ranked teams that we didn't take advantage of," Veitch said. "We continue to learn from our mistakes and work harder on making spares and taking pin count when games are close."
Â
One of Tulane's close losses came at the hands of No. 2 McKendree on Saturday. The match was tied, 1,021-1,021, after five games, but McKendree won, 118-108, in the tiebreak.
Â
Freshman Madison McCall and senior Michelle Ng placed 22nd and 23rd, respectively, for the Green Wave. McCall posted a 203.80 pin average, while Ng bowled a 203.40 pin average in the traditional games.
Â
The next tournament on the slate is the United States Bowling Congress Sectionals, March 9-11. Team selections and locations will be announced Feb. 21. The Wave has been selected to compete in the tournament each of the last three years, placing eighth the last two trips.
