NEW ORLEANS - Tulane track and field hits the road again to continue the indoor season, with the majority of the squad trekking west to New Mexico for the Don Kirby Collegiate Invitational Feb. 9-10 inside the Albuquerque Convention Center. Junior Emmanuel Rotich is the lone Green Wave competitor traveling to Washington's Husky Classic in Seattle Feb. 9-10 while redshirt juniors Emma Newton and Lauren Bartels are in Boston for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University, Feb. 9-10.
ABOUT THE MEETS
The Green Wave will face off against a deep field in New Mexico, including Angelo State, Appalachian State, Arizona State, Campbell, Central Arizona, Colorado State, Columbia, Eastern New Mexico, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, Nevada, host New Mexico, New Mexico Highlands, New Mexico JC, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Rice, Sam Houston State, San Diego State, San Francisco State, San Jose State, Southern Utah, University of the Southwest, Stanford, Stephen F. Austin, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Colorado Springs, UCLA, Utah, Utah State, UTEP, Washington, Washington State, West Texas A&M and Wyoming. Tulane athletes will compete in ten track and field events, including the men's 200m and 400m dash, women's 60m, 200m and 400m dash, women's 60m hurdles, women's 4x400m relay, women's long jump, women's high jump and women's pole vault.
"The goal of this weekend in New Mexico is to give our best kids an opportunity to go to the right places to get improvement in their marks ," Associate Head Coach Doug Fraley said. "Sprinters and runners want to go to Albuquerque. It's a slight elevation, it's a fast, springy track. The way we look at this weekend is to give our best kids an opportunity to improve amd to compete at the best venue for their events to create momentum heading into the conference championships."
Last season at Don Kirby, Tulane's pole vaulters shined against some of the top jumpers in the nation. Then-sophomore Rebekah Markel was one of those pole vaulters, jumping 3.75m (12-3.50) to earn her a No. 21 finish.
Fraley said Markel is looking to continue her steady season-long progression while sharpening her focus on qualifying for the national championships.
"Not only is Rebekah trying to PR again, but more importantly, this weekend is an opportunity for her to move herself up the national list," Fraley said. "Jumpers are trying to fight their way inside the top 16 because that's who qualifies for the NCAAs. Her big goal is to continue to build momentum heading into the conference championship, but also move up that list if she has a good day."
Rotich will head to the Husky Classic to compete in the men's 5000m. Rotich's indoor personal best in the event is 13:52.15, which he set earlier this season at the Boston University Season Opener. Bartels
"For Emmaunel, there's no better place in the country to run the 5k this weekend than in Washington," Fraley said. "Schools from all over the country will be bringing their long distance runners either there or Boston this weekend to try to get NCAA-qualifying marks and improve their conference standing marks. Distance runners want to go to Washington or Boston."
LAST TIME OUT
Freshman Bridgid Selfors won the 3000m while sprinters freshman Kyah Loyd, sophomore Brandi Hughes and junior Jessica Duckett shined in their races, highlighting a successful day for Tulane at LSU's Bayou Bengal Invitational last Friday in Baton Rouge.
Selfors rolled in the 3000m run, setting a new personal record en route to a first-place finish. Her time of 10:15.29 topped her previous best of 10:25.72 (Vanderbilt Invitational, 1/20) by 10 seconds, and she beat the second-place finisher by nearly three seconds.
The sprinters made waves for the Green Wave in Baton Rouge, notching new top times and earning numerous top three finishes. Loyd set a new personal record in the 60m dash prelim, topping her previous best time of 7.79 (Vanderbilt Invite - prelim, 1/20) with a mark of 7.67 to qualify for the finals. Loyd finished fifth (7.68) in the finals.
Duckett and Hughes qualified for the 60m hurdles final with prelim times of 8.78 and 8.71, respectively. Duckett finished second (8.54) and Hughes finished third (8.57) in the finals.
Sophomore Maya Harewood finished second in the 400m, setting a new personal record in the process with a converted time of 5.73.
