FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. – Tulane bowling placed sixth at the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships Sectional Qualifier this weekend at St. Clair Bowl.
The Green Wave finished with 12,295 total pins, 503 pins shy of fourth place across 64 games this weekend. The top four teams advance from the sectional qualifier to the USBC national championship tournament.
"This weekend was definitely a disappointment. The six girls who competed truly wanted to make it," Tulane head coach Hayley Veitch said. "Unfortunately, after a rough first block with a high scoring pace, it was hard for us to get back into the running. I am proud of the fight the ladies had today as they never gave up and we were able to finish a respectable sixth."
Teams competed in 64 Baker games, grouped into four blocks of four-game matches, with team standings calculated by total pinfall. On Saturday, the Green Wave posted 2,860 pins in the first block and sat in 16th place. The Wave, however, rebounded to score 3,155 pins in the second block to move up to 12th by the end of the day.
Sunday, Tulane racked up 3,205 pins – the fourth-highest total of any team in that block – in the first block of games to jump up to seventh place. In the final block on Sunday, the Wave totaled 3.075 pins to conclude the tournament in sixth place.
On Friday, Tulane athletes competed in the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships Sectional Qualifier, in which the top seven individuals earned a spot in the national championship. Junior Tiera Gulum was Tulane's top finisher at 19th, posting a pin total of 1,225, including a high score of 232 in the sixth game. Senior Michelle Ng posted a 1,187 pin total, including a 235, and freshman Madison McCall posted a 1,179 pin total to place 32nd and 37th, respectively.
This was the highest Tulane has ever placed at the USBC sectional qualifier. The Green Wave finished eighth each of the last two years.
The Green Wave travel to Smyrna, Tenn., next weekend, March 16-18 for the Music City Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt. The following weekend, Tulane will compete for the Southland Bowling League Championship, March 24-25, in Dallas.
