NEW ORLEANS - Tulane track and field will look to continue the momentum gained from a successful weekend at the Louisiana Classics, when it travels to Houston, Texas, to compete in the Victor Lopez Classic, hosted by Rice, this Friday and Saturday.
Friday's field events are slated to start at 9:30 a.m. Friday while running events begin at 7:10 p.m. Field events commence at 11 a.m. and running events kick off at 12 p.m. on Saturday - the second and final day of competition.
QUOTE
"We look at this meet as really the first significant competition of the outdoor season. It's the week before we get into the real critical time of the season, which is the month of April. It's important for us to get off to a strong start and for us to establish where we are. We're looking for athletes to start the season at a higher level than they did one year ago. I don't necessarily expect a lot of them to be in mid-season form, but I certainly do expect to see some growth and development, especially from our upperclassmen - sophomores, juniors and seniors. The freshman are pretty wide-eyed and nervous, and it gives them an opportunity to get started, as well." -Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Peterson
ABOUT THE MEET
Tulane will see competitors from all over the map, including host Rice, Texas Southern, Sam Houston State, Houston, Chicago State, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Houston Baptist, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar and others.
The Green Wave will have performances across more than 20 events - throwing and running - from the majority of the 2018 roster, which features 43 total student-athletes (28 women and 15 men). Junior Emmanuel Rotich, however, will take the meet off, resting for next weekend's trip to UCLA.
"I think that we are a little bit better outside than we are indoors," Peterson said. "The makeup of our team suits the outdoor schedule a little bit better. We're covering a lot more events. We have athletes in almost every event, and that's a good, healthy sign of development for our program."
The meet will be team scored with scoring similar to championship meets.
The meet will be streamed via MileSplitTX.
LAST TIME OUT
Tulane notched numerous personal records and saw junior Rebekah Markel and senior Jacqueline Esmay each earn event wins in day one, highlighting a successful weekend at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Markel won the women's pole vault with a mark of 4.00m, earning her second consecutive win in the event. Esmay led the field in the women's hammer throw, winning the event with a mark of 55.08m and beating the second-place finisher by .75m.
On the track, junior Jessica Duckett set a new outdoor personal record in the 200m dash. Her second-place time of 24.69 topped her previous best mark of 24.91, which she set at last year's Louisiana Classics.
In day two of the competition, freshman Bridgid Selfors won the women's 5000m race with a time of 18:03.22, bringing home Tulane's only event win of the day. Freshman Rachel Maue claimed a 13th place finish in the women's 1500m race, recording a new personal record in the process.
On the sprint track, sophomore Brandi Hughes finished third in the 100m hurdles, setting a new personal record with her time of 13.69. Hughes also set a new personal record in the 400m hurdles, where she finished second with a time of 1:01.55.
For the men's team, junior Pierce Hill finished sixth in the 1500m race. His time of 4:07.37 is a new personal record, besting his previous top time by .62 seconds.
