Bowling Bows Out of Southland Championship
Mar 24, 2018 | Women's Bowling
DALLAS – Tulane bowling's time at the Southland Bowling League Championship came to an end Friday as the Green Wave fell in both matches to Stephen F. Austin and Monmouth at USA Bowl.
Â
The Green Wave dropped both matches in the tiebreak games. The Wave won the traditional match against the Ladyjacks, but SFA won the Baker game and the Baker best of seven. In the elimination match Tulane dropped the traditional game and won the Baker game, where it was edged 4-3.
Â
"We came so far this year as a team but towards the end we had a few setbacks that hindered our performance," Tulane head coach Hayley Veitch said. "Unfortunately, the team didn't work well together on the lanes today, so we were unable to achieve the result we wanted. It was an emotional day, as it is never easy for seniors to throw their last shots of their collegiate careers, but they can leave knowing what an impact they have made to Tulane bowling."
Â
In the opening match, Tulane scored a 1,007 pinfall against the Ladyjacks, winning by 145 pins. Junior Tiera Gulum scored a 238 and sophomore Isabelle Lee put up a 212 while the other three bowlers scored 185 or higher. Tulane won the traditional game 1,007-682.
Â
SFA then put up a 1,011-point performance, tying the series at 1-1 with a 1,011-895 win. Tulane earned a victory in the first game of the baker best-of-seven but fell in four straight as Stephen F. Austin won the next four to take a 4-1 win and a 2-1 match win.
Â
In the elimination game against Monmouth the Green Wave edged ahead 411-396 after five frames and held a 757-721 advantage heading into the final frame, but the Hawks scored a nine-spare to win the traditional game, 865-862.
Â
In the baker total pinfall games, Tulane pulled out a clutch 930-843 victory to force the tiebreak best-of-seven baker series. Tulane won the opening game before Monmouth took a 2-1 series lead. The Green Wave responded with two wins to move ahead 3-2 before the Hawks tied it 3-3 to force a game seven where they edged out a 4-3 win and 2-1 match victory.
Â
The tournament marked the likely career conclusion for senior and two-time All-American Michelle Ng, and graduate senior Nikki Williams.
