The Green Wave (11-15) scored single runs in the third, seventh and ninth innings. The Lions (19-9) totaled nine hits and scored multiple runs in three innings, with two in the first, and three in the fourth and eighth innings.
Â
Sophomore designated hitter Grant Mathews went 2-for-4 and scored a run, and sophomore shortstop Sal Gozzo hit an RBI single for Tulane, which finished with seven hits. Tulane used 10 pitchers in the game, led by sophomore Trent Johnson (1-2) who pitched two innings at the start. SLU starter Mason Knopp (2-1) went 6.0 innings and earned the win.
Â
"We had almost as many hits as they did, but theirs came with guys on base," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "Their starter did a great job tonight, and you have to tip your cap to him. He threw the ball in the strike zone and they made some plays behind him."
Â
Tulane scored in the top of the third when junior catcher Acy Owen singled, moved to third on junior center fielder Grant Witherspoon's eighth double of the season and scored on a passed ball. The Green Wave added a second run in the seventh when junior catcher Ty Johnson led off the inning with a double down the left field line and scored on Gozzo's base hit up the middle to make the score 6-2.
Â
In the ninth inning, Mathews laced a single up the middle and scored from first when sophomore Luke Glancy drove a pinch-hit single to left center and the ball was misplayed by the left fielder. The play made the score 9-3.
Â
SLU scored twice in the first inning when second baseman Cody Grosse tripled off the wall in right field and went home when the throw into third base bounced off him and rolled near the third base dugout, and center fielder Bryce Steckler hit an RBI double. In the fourth inning, third baseman Trey Harrington hit a three-run home run to make the score 5-1. An RBI single by pinch hitter Mike Taylor in the fifth made it 6-1. The Lions scored three runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly and a pair of walks.
Â
Owen caught two runners stealing against SLU, which entered the game leading the nation in stolen bases. He teamed up with Artigues to gun down a runner in the second inning, then threw to Gozzo in the seventh. The shortstop caught the ball going toward second and swiped the tag as he leapt over the runner for the out.
Â
Tulane travels to face USF in a three-game series beginning Thursday in Tampa. Game times are 6 p.m. CT Thursday, 5:30 p.m. CT Friday and noon CT Saturday.
