NEW ORLEANS - Tulane track and field will spend its second weekend of spring break in Los Angeles, California, traveling out west to compete in the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival and Jim Bush Legends Invitational, hosted by UCLA, this Friday and Saturday.
Friday's field events start at 4 p.m. PT Friday while track events begin at 4:50 p.m. PT. Field events commence at 10:30 a.m. PT and running events kick off at 2:05 p.m. PT on Saturday - the second and final day of competition.
ABOUT THE MEET
Tulane will face competitors from all across the map, including host UCLA, Minnesota, Washington State, Cornell, UC Irvine, San Diego State, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara and others.
The Green Wave will have performances in more than 25 events - throwing, jumping and running - from the majority of the 2018 roster, which features 43 total student-athletes (28 women and 15 men).
The Bob Larsen Distance Carnival is a non-scoring meet while the Jim Bush Legends Invite will use team scoring similar to championship meets (individual events - 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1; relay events - 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1).
LAST TIME OUT
The Green Wave roll into Los Angeles on the heels of a successful weekend at Rice's Victor Lopez Classic in Houston, Texas.
The men's and women's distance runners delivered strong performances in the opening day at the competition, posting numerous career-best and season-best times in the 1500m and 5000m races en route to two heat wins. Senior Jennifer LaMori won heat one in the 1500m race and set a new season-best time of 4:52.81 while redshirt junior Emma Newton and sophomore Sarah Cella posted new season-best times and finished eighth (4:47.53) and 12th (4:50.61), respectively, in heat two of the event.
On the men's side, freshman Carlos Zervigon and junior Pierce Hill both won their heats in the men's 1500m race, claiming victories with lifetime-best times of 4:06.72 in heat one and 4:04.87 in heat two, respectively.
In day two, the Green Wave's sprinters and hurdlers dominated in their events. Junior Jessica Duckett and sophomore Brandi Hughes finished second - 13.51 (-0.5) - and third - 13.75 (-0.5) - in the 100m hurdles, respectively, before taking the top two spots in the 400m hurdles.
Duckett placed first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.82 while Hughes took second with a personal-best time of 1:00.40.
Sophomore Maya Harewood won the women's 400m race with a time of 54.79, defeating the second-place finisher by .13 seconds. On the men's side, sophomore Raymond Kibet recorded a time of 21.90 in the men's 200m race, earning a fifth-place finish in his heat and a ninth-place finish overall.
Junior Rebekah Markel helped the Wave conclude their weekend by setting a new outdoor personal record en route to winning the pole vault event. Markel set a new lifetime best in the pole vault with a mark of 4.05m, topping her previous outdoor best of 4.04m, which she set last May.
