Baseball Scores Three in the Ninth to Beat LSU, 10-9
Apr 18, 2018 | Baseball
Trailing 9-7 after the Tigers took the lead with three runs in the top of the ninth, junior center fielder Grant Witherspoon led off the bottom half with a home run to cut it to 9-8. Sophomore third baseman Kody Hoese then delivered his second ninth-inning game-tying hit four games when he doubled home sophomore second baseman Jonathon Artigues. Two intentional walks loaded the bases for Glancy, who saw four pitches to drive in the winning run.
The ninth inning was the second time in the game the Green Wave (17-21) responded to an LSU (24-14) scoring flurry. After the Tigers plated three runs in the top of the third, the Wave took the lead away with five runs in the bottom half, and then added two more runs in the fourth.
Artigues finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. He hit a three-run home run in the third inning, then added an RBI double in the fourth. Witherspoon went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Witherspoon is now 12-for-24 with seven RBI and 12 runs scored in six career games against LSU.
Sophomore Trent Johnson (2-2) earned the win for Tulane while Matthew Beck (1-1) took the loss for LSU.
"I told the team at the end: you got punched in the face and backed you into the ropes, and you might have sat down on the bottom one, but you didn't sit on the canvas," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "Spoon's big hit there closed it to one run, and the at bats just got better. We made some uncharacteristic mistakes that gave them a chance at it, but we responded well. We had a great crowd tonight, it's great rivalry of course, and I'm just happy for the kids."
Tulane immediately responded to LSU's three-run third with five runs in the bottom half. Witherspoon hit an RBI single to score junior catcher Acy Owen, who began the inning with a double. Artigues followed with his second home run of the season – a three-run opposite-field shot to right field to put the Green Wave ahead, 4-3. Sophomore shortstop Sal Gozzo then drove an RBI single up the middle to plate junior first baseman Trevor Jensen and make it 5-3.
Junior left fielder Ty Johnson, who went 2-for-5 and scored twice, hit a one-out single in the fourth and scored when Artigues drove a double to the gap in right center. Witherspoon, who followed Johnson with a base hit of his own, scored on a sacrifice fly by Jensen to extend the lead to 7-3.
Freshman Connor Pellerin relieved junior starter Will McAffer to begin the fourth and struck out a career-high five batters over a career-long 4.1 innings. He allowed just a run on two hits and three walks.
LSU scored three runs in the third when a pair of errors came into play, leading to an RBI double by right fielder Antoine Duplantis and a run-scoring single by first baseman Austin Bain. Duplantis drove in a run in the seventh that cut Tulane's lead to 7-4. Third baseman Jake Slaughter tripled in a run and scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to make it 7-6.
In the top of the ninth, center fielder Zach Watson tied the game with a double to left field, before left fielder Daniel Cabrera and catcher Nick Coomes, who was 4-for-5, hit RBI singles to give LSU the 9-7 lead.
The Green Wave are 4-1 on the nine-game homestand that continues this weekend against East Tennessee State at Turchin Stadium. Tulane, on its conference bye weekend, plays a three-game non-conference set against ETSU, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
