NEW ORLEANS – Tulane's student-athletes finished 15th in the 2018 NCAA Team Works Award Competition, completing more than 800 hours of community service over the course of three months.
Â
The NCAA Team Works Community Champion Award is a competition between Division I and II membership institutions that encourages student-athletes to complete community service hours during a designated period. The award is designed to acknowledge the hard work and commitment to social responsibility by student-athletes each year.
Â
"Our student-athletes at Tulane University are committed to serving the community, and this competition is living proof of that commitment," Ben Weiner Director of Athletics Chair Troy Dannen said. "To be ranked as one of the top institutions in the nation for community service says a lot about our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and the values of our university. This is an outstanding accomplishment, and we could not be more proud."
Â
Tulane improved seven spots from last year's competition with over four times as many hours tallied. Green Wave student-athletes, in collaboration with Tulane's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, participated in a variety of community service projects between the months of January and March, including hosting Special Olympics Sports Clinics and Tournaments, volunteering for animal welfare at Zeus' Rescues, tutoring students at Crocker Elementary and Newcomb Children's Center, making and donating sandwiches to the Ozanam Inn, teaching swimming lessons for Swim 4 Success, hosting an Easter egg hunt at Tulane Lakeside Hospital and creating hundreds of Easter cards for Cards for Hospitalized Kids.
Â
"Finishing seven spots higher, with more than four times as many hours as last year, is a true testament to the leadership of AD Troy Dannen, Associate AD for Academic Advising/Senior Woman Administrator Charvi Greer and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee," said Cornell Sneed, senior academic counselor. "Everyone made service a priority this year, and the numbers will be telling at the end of the year as we are on track to have one of our best service-producing years ever. I would love to thank administration, coaches, staff, and student-athletes for all of their hard work in making sure we give back to the community that supports us."
Â
Tulane was the only American Athletic Conference school to place in the top 20. Miami (Fla.) finished first and was followed by Towson and Louisville.
