NEW ORLEANS – As we recognize the National Day of Spain, October 12, we take a look back at the Tulane University Athletics Department’s return to Spain over the summer for a study abroad experience with 38 student-athletes and six staff members in tow. The Study Abroad program is generously supported by longtime Tulane Athletics’ supporters Jill H. and Avram A. Glazer.
During the 13-day journey across the country the student-athletes were given the opportunity to explore a variety of landmarks throughout Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona. The unique experience blended sports, culture, and academics through guided tours, cultural activities, and immersive learning.
From the academic perspective of the trip the student-athletes participated in the SLAM 4830 – Sport Leadership & Culture: Heroes, Icons, and Global Influence class taught by Tulane University professor Dr. Marcus Coleman. The student-athletes also attended guest lectures on gender and sport in Spain, mental health and inequality, and the business and performance sides of athletics.
Away from the classroom, the Green Wave student-athletes toured three of the major cities in Spain making stops in Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona. Some of the highlights from the trip included walking tours of Madrid’s city center and Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, a catamaran cruise on the Mediterranean, a hands-on paella cooking class, and an exciting La Liga match at Villarreal.
This sports-centered study abroad program gave student-athletes the chance to experience new cultures, gain global perspectives, and build lasting memories while representing Tulane University Athletics on an international stage. Here from current Tulane student-athletes Bella Griffin (beach volleyball), Skylar Ensign (beach volleyball), and Sam Howard (football) about their experiences in Spain in the video below.
