NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University Athletics Department took 48 student-athletes to The Land of Cervantes this summer for a study abroad experience throughout Spain. The student-athletes were given the opportunity to explore a variety of landmarks across Spain while also participating in lectures to learn about different sports and cultural experiences.
Tulane Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Michele Adams led the student-athletes through a curriculum for their sociology of sport class during the trip. Multiple guest lectures throughout the trip also contributed to the class structure covering topics such as gender and sport in Spain, inequality and mental health in Spain, sport business and performance, and fans, racism, and social justice.
Outside of the class with Dr. Adams the Green Wave student-athletes toured three of the major cities in Spain making stops in Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona. The student-athletes had the opportunity to experience the local culture in each city through several tours, a cooking class, and a La Liga match between Real Madrid and Deportivo Alaves. The tours ranged walking tours in the Madrid city center and Barcelona Gothic Quarter to a catamaran tour on the Mediterranean Sea to tours of Bernabeu Stadium and Mestalla Stadium and much more.
