"It looks like we're going to have great weather throughout the weekend. We're very excited to get to this time of the year. It's the postseason now, everybody's peaking and getting reading for high-level performances. It's going to be a great competition." -Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Eric Peterson
ABOUT THE MEET
All 12 of The American schools will be present at the conference championships this weekend, including host Cincinnati, ECU, Houston, Memphis, SMU, Temple, Tulsa, UConn, UCF, USF and newcomer Wichita State. SMU, Temple and UCF will field only a women's team.
Friday's events for the Green Wave include: four heptathlon events (100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m dash), women's hammer throw, women's 800m prelim, men's and women's 200m prelim, men's and women's 400m hurdles prelim and men's and women's 10,000m final. Three more heptathlon events (long jump, javelin, 800m run) occur on Saturday, as do the men's discus, women's pole vault, women's 100m hurdle prelim, women's long jump, women's discus, men's and women's 1500m prelim, men's and women's 400m prelim, men's 100m prelim and men's and women's 3000m steeplechase.
The conference championship concludes Sunday, but not before Green Wave competitors - who qualify for finals in Friday and Saturday's prelims - look to earn spots on the podium in those respective events. Day three events for Tulane athletes will also include the men's and women's javelin, women's high jump, women's triple jump, men's and women's 4x100 relay, men's and women's 5000m race and men's women's 4x400m relay.
All three days of the meet will be streamed live on Facebook through the American Digital Network.
The conference championships are a ticketed event. Tickets will be on sale at the main gate to Gettler and will cost $10 for all three days or $5 per day for adults and $6 for all three days or $3 per day for youth/seniors. Children under the age of 2 and students with valid college identification cards will be permitted free entry.
PODIUM WATCH ON THE MEN'S SIDE
400m
Sophomore Raymond Kibet is the conference's defending 400m dash champion, and he will look to defend his title this weekend. Kibet's top time in the event this season of 46.59 is The American's third-best performance. He won the race last year in 45.84 seconds.
3000m Steeplechase
Junior Emmanuel Rotich moved into the top spot on the conference's performance list last week, as the defending conference champion posted the fourth-best time in the nation at 8:40.66. Rotich earned The American's Male Track Athlete of the Week honor for his effort, giving him momentum as he enters this weekend's competition and looks to defend his title.
4x100m Relay
Tulane's team of Kibet, sophomore Devin Glenn, sophomore Corey Dauphine and freshman Jaeatavian Toles hold The American's fourth-best time in the event this season. The foursome posted a time of 40.50 - their season-best - at the Jim Bush Legends Invitational (3/31).
PODIUM WATCH ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE
100m Hurdles
Junior Jessica Duckett won the 100m hurdles race at last season's outdoor conference championship, and she is back to try to do it again. She set the school record with a time of 13.23 at LSU Alumni Gold (4/21), giving her The American's top time in the event by .22 seconds.
Sophomore Brandi Hughes and freshman Kyah Loyd hold The American's fourth and seventh-best times this season.
400m Hurdles
Duckett will be competing for her third straight 400m hurdles title. Her season-best time of 58.08 at LSU Alumni Gold catapulted her to the top of the league's performance list, and her hurdle time is top-35 in the NCAA this year.
Hughes holds the conference's fifth-best time this season.
3000m Steeplechase
Junior Mckenzie Melius owns the school record in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:34.20 - a time she record earlier this season at the Mt. Sac Relays. Her performance is The American's third-best time this season.
Pole Vault
Junior Rebekah Markel will go for gold in the pole vault, as she holds the conference's second-best mark this season. Her personal best of 4.11m - set at LSU Alumni Gold - trails just one other vaulter in The American.
