NEW ORLEANS – Seven Tulane track and field athletes have made their way down to Tampa, Florida, in preparation for the NCAA East Preliminaries, which begin Thursday, May 24 and conclude Saturday, May 26 at USF Track & Field Stadium. Five women and two men will represent the Green Wave across six events with hopes of advancing to the outdoor national championship.
ABOUT THE MEET
Over 170 teams and 1,700 athletes are in Tampa for the preliminary round. To qualify for the regional, Tulane's athletes needed to rank in the top 48 in each event among all declared competitors in the east region. At the regional, a top-12 finish advances them to the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Oregon, from June 6-9.
On the women's side, junior Jessica Duckett, appearing at the regional meet for the third time in her career, will compete in two events - 400m hurdles on Thursday and 100m hurdles on Friday. Her 100m hurdles time of 13.02 seconds at The American Outdoor Championships set a new school record and put her 10th in the east region. Duckett also qualified for the east regional's 400m hurdles with a time of 57.63 - ninth-best in the east - at The American Championships.
Duckett is joined in the 100m hurdles by sophomore Brandi Hughes and freshman Kyah Loyd, both making their first appearances at the regionals. Hughes and Loyd share a top time this year of 13.45 seconds, putting them at 40th and 41st, respectively, in the east region.
In the field events, junior Rebekah Markel will compete in the pole vault on Friday. She cleared a height of 4.11m (13' 5 3/4") at The American Championships, earning her the 22nd spot in the east region. This will be Markel's second appearance at the regional meet.
Senior Jacqueline Esmay competes in the hammer on Saturday. She will look to build on her personal-best throw of 58.27m (191' 2"), which came at The American Championships. Her performance earned her a spot in the regionals, as the mark moved her up to 43rd in the east, giving her an opportunity to compete for a national championship. This is her first career regional, and she is Tulane's first hammer representative at the regional since 2009 (Katarina Busljeta).
On the men's side, junior Emmanuel Rotich will compete in the 3000m steeplechase on Friday night. He was the east region's top steeplechaser during the regular season, recording a leading mark of 8:40.46 at the Payton Jordan Invitational, which was nearly two seconds faster than the next-best athlete in the east. Rotich competed in the steeplechase event at the regional meet last year before advancing to the national championship.
Sophomore Raymond Kibet runs in the 400m race on Thursday. His time of 46.59 from the Houston Alumni Invitational was 27th in the east region. Kibet is making his second straight 400m appearance and will look to make his second straight national championship appearance, as well.
Live scoring of the meet can be found here. The NCAA East Prelims will be broadcast live all three days by FloSports, a subscription streaming service.
