
Baseball’s Witherspoon, Jensen, Artigues Earn LSWA Honors

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane outfielder Grant Witherspoon, first baseman Trevor Jensen and second baseman Jonathon Artigues were named to the 2018 All-Louisiana College Baseball Team by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.

Witherspoon was a first-team selection, Jensen was named to the second team and Artigues earned honorable mention. The team was selected by a statewide panel of college baseball sports information directors and media members.

Witherspoon, a Lakewood, Colo. native, who was selected 120th overall in the Major League Baseball Draft in June, was also a first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection. He led the Green Wave with a .330 batting average, 53 RBI, 12 home runs, 19 doubles, 13 steals and a .436 on-base percentage while scoring 45 runs. He compiled 200 hits in just three seasons, and he tallied 24 multiple hit games and drove in at least two runs in 15 games this year. Among his 12 homers this season, he hit three grand slams and had two multiple homer contests.

Jensen, a junior from Dunedin, Fla., hit .306 with nine home runs and 100 total bases, and totaled 12 doubles, 35 RBI and 35 runs scored. He tallied 17 multiple hit games, and was a sure glove at first base, recording a .993 fielding percentage. He was on fire to end the year recording a hit in each of his last 10 games, and hitting .355 with eight homers, five double and 20 RBI and 22 runs in the final 23 games of the season.

Artigues, a redshirt sophomore, saw his first significant action for the Green Wave this season, starting 57 games at second base. He led the team with 49 runs scored and compiled a .303 batting average and .385 on-base percentage. He drove in 38 runs and stole 10 bases, spending most of the season as the leadoff hitter. He popped 20 extra base hits, including 16 doubles, and tallied 20 multiple hit games and 11 multiple RBI games.
