Sailing Officially Elevated to Varsity Status
Jul 1, 2018 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – With the new academic year beginning Sunday, Tulane sailing has officially been elevated to a varsity sport.
Â
Sailing was announced as Tulane's 17th varsity sport in June 2017. Charles Higgins, the program's first coach, was hired in October.
Â
"It's a pretty incredible moment," Higgins said about sailing officially becoming a varsity sport. "It's going to be really big. There have been a lot of moving parts in the background, but we're just now going to start to show what we can become. Hopefully all those pieces we've been working on since October are going to be the groundwork laid well to really succeed going forward."
Â
As sailing formally joins the Tulane Athletics family, it now has a permanent home on the department's athletics website, TulaneGreenWave.com. Green Wave sailing social media pages have also been activated. The team can be found on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Â
Tulane sailing's first-ever varsity roster has been announced Sunday as well. The Green Wave will have 31 members on the team for the 2018-19 fall including 26 members elevated from the club team and five newcomers who will make up the team's first freshman class.
Â
Tulane's roster hails from 17 different states and includes 17 women and 14 men.
Â
The team's 2018 fall schedule will be announced later in June complete with home regattas on Lake Ponchartrain.
Tulane is now officially the 15th NCAA Division I school offering sailing as a varsity sport for women, joining Boston College, College of Charleston, Cornell, Dartmouth, George Washington, Georgetown, Hampton, Harvard, Hawai'i, Navy, Old Dominion, South Florida, Stanford and Yale.
