How NOLA Built Me – By Tiera Gulum
Jul 27, 2018 | Women's Bowling, WE ARE
New Orleans means a lot to me.
I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be in this city and be a part of it. It showed me that there is more to the world than just me and what I'd experienced so far.
I didn't know what Tulane was until maybe a month before I visited. I wasn't familiar with the university until my guidance counselor connected me with Coach (Hayley) Veitch. I didn't know anything about New Orleans at that time, but now it's such a big part of what I want in my life
When I got here I was really independent, because that's what I was raised to be in New York. It's kind of like a dog-eat-dog world there and everyone is looking out for themselves.
I never knew what a true family of a team was supposed to be like until I got to New Orleans and saw how my friends and teammates treated me. It showed me what it meant to be dependent on someone other than myself, and if I never learned that lesson, I would be a lot worse off today than I am.
Moving to New Orleans and becoming part of the bowling family at Tulane was a big change for me. I needed to have people come around me who would facilitate change and help me grow. I've come such a long way thanks to my teammates, my friends, the city, and especially Coach Veitch. She's put so much time and effort into me, I'm beyond thankful for her.
Becoming part of the community also means giving back. The work we do with the Tulane Outreach program, Habitat for Humanity and the important work we do with the Special Olympics are what bridge the gap for me between Tulane and New Orleans being one unit.
I can't imagine living without my best friends. Tulane kind of fell into my lap in that I didn't really know about it until I practically committed to go here. I think somebody or something had a plan for me, because who I am today is a better version of me than who I was when I arrived at Tulane, and I don't know what it would've been like if I had gone elsewhere.
The sense of community and togetherness, the festivals and culture – it's all so inviting and warm. We don't really have anything like that in New York. I love how New Orleans makes me feel and how it's helped me grow, and I think I have a lot more room to grow.
