
Kipchumba Wins LSU Invitational Title in First College Race

BATON ROUGE – In his first collegiate race, Evans Kipchumba claimed the individual title at the LSU Invitational, highlighting the Green Wave's meet at Highland Road Park on Saturday morning.
The Green Wave women placed fourth as a team with 119 points while the men took fifth place with 94 points.
Kipchumba was excellent on Saturday morning for the men in their four-mile race, taking the individual title with a time of 20:25.40. He beat out Southeastern Louisiana's Grant O'Callaghan by four full seconds.
Carlos Zervigon – last week's individual winner at the Nicholls Cross Country Invitational – finished 12th this week with a time of 21:18.80.
"Evans was outstanding in his first collegiate race," said Eric Peterson, Tulane's director of cross country and track & field. "Carlos continues to run consistently well in a key role."
Patrick Dougherty was 25th in 22:00.90, and Tom Coe was 27th in 22:07.70. Pierce Hill was right behind him to finish Tulane's scoring with a 29th-place finish in 22:20.60.
Also competing for Tulane on Saturday was Joshua Cheruyot who took 48th in 23:17.40, Ian Valdez who placed 54th in 23:50.10 and Jamie Polakoff who came in 57th in 24:28.30.
The women began the morning, starting their three-mile race at 7:30 a.m. Just under 19 minutes later, Mary Catherine Stovall crossed the finish line as the first Tulane runner. Stovall took 11th place overall and score nine points for the Green Wave with her time of 18:51.34.
Reid Belanger was next across the line for Tulane, placing 18th overall and scoring 16 points with a time of 19:50.45. Rachel Maue was close behind in 24th place for 22 points with a time of 20:28.48.
"Mary Catherine, Reid and Rachel did a good job at the front of our team and assuming leadership positions on the team today," Peterson said.
Paige Fatland was 38th to score 33 points in 21:08.11, and capping off Tulane's scoring was Oneke Gwan who took 46th place and scored 39 points with her time of 22:50.41.
Former Green Wave runner Emma Newton won the race on the women's side as an unattached competitor with a time of 17:45.64.
Tulane heads out of state for the first time this season next week when it takes on the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday.
