Jan 19, 2019 | Men's Basketball
STORRS, Conn. - Caleb Daniels eclipsed the 20-point barrier for the fifth time this season, but the Tulane men's basketball team dropped an 87-71 American Athletic Conference road tilt against UConn on Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion.
Daniels shot 8-for-10 from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc to finish with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists. Blake Paul contributed 13 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench, while Samir Sehic added 13 points and six boards for Tulane (4-13, 0-5 AAC).
Jalen Adams scored a game-high 31 points on 13-for-26 shooting to lead four UConn (11-8, 2-4 AAC) players in double-figures. Christian Vital and Josh Charlton tallied 18 points apiece off the bench, as Alterique Gilbert scored 12 more.
The Huskies shot over 60 percent as a team in the second have and over 50 percent overall.
UConn stretched its lead to as many as 14 just over halfway through the first half when an Adams basket made it 25-11. The Green Wave finally got itself settled offensively, making five of six shot attempts over a three-minute span to cut the deficit to six, 28-22, on a 3-pointer by Daniels with five minutes left.
Both sides exchanged baskets on their final possessions of the period, before the Huskies took a 37-30 edge into the locker room at halftime.
Tulane shot 13-for-30 (.433) from the field, while UConn went 16-for-38 (.421) on the floor while winning the turnover battle, 8-3, in the first half.
The Green Wave were active early in the second half, getting stops on the defensive end and getting great looks on offense. A layup by Sehic and a two-handed dunk by Connor Crabtree pulled the Wave within three, 44-41, just four minutes after the intermission. The Huskies countered with a 12-5 scoring advantage down to the 12:36 mark to push the margin back to double digits, forcing head coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr., to call timeout with 12:36 remaining.
UConn's streak extended to 11 straight points over a two-minute span to increase its lead to 16 points, 62-46 at the 11-minute mark.
The Green Wave got on a hot streak, making six of seven shot attempts, but the Huskies went five of six during that span, including multiple 3-pointers to keep an 18-point advantage.
Tulane scored nine straight points to get down inside the two-minute mark, but UConn still held an 80-68 lead.
The margin wouldn't get below double digits for the remainder of the day, as the Huskies closed out the 87-71 win.
The Green Wave returns home to host preseason American Athletic Conference favorite UCF on Wednesday, January 23. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse and the game will be broadcast on the WatchESPN app.
