
Men’s Tennis Hosts Alcorn State in Season-Opening Doubleheader

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's tennis team opens serve on its 2019 spring season on Monday, January 21 with a home doubleheader against Alcorn State.
Both matches will be played at the City Park Tennis Center with the first contest set to begin at 11 a.m.
SCOUTING ALCORN STATE
The Braves return four starters from a squad that reached the semifinals of the 2018 SWAC Championships. Alcorn's top returnee is sophomore Stojan Stojanovski who played No. 2 singles last year as a freshman. He earned a spot on the SWAC All-Conference Team and posted a 9-7 record at No. 2 singles including a 4-2 mark in conference.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Tulane and Alcorn State met in New Orleans last spring on March 9, as the Green Wave cruised to a pair of shutout wins, 7-0 and 6-0.
THE DEEP AND BALANCED ROSTER
Tulane returns six letterwinners from its 2018 American Athletic Conference championship team including seniors Tyler Schick and Eric Wagner, juniors Tim Ruetzel, Luis Erlenbusch and two-time all-conference pick Ewan Moore, as well as sophomore Hamish Stewart.
NEW FACES
The Green Wave welcomes four newcomers for the 2019 dual match season highlighted by graduate student Felix Ewers who came over from USC Upstate, junior Dane Esses who transferred in from Pepperdine, sophomore Akos Kotorman who arrives after one season at Baylor and freshman Benji Jacobson.
IN THE ITA RANKINGS
The Green Wave have four singles players and one doubles team listed in the ITA's rankings, while Tulane as a team is receiving votes in the team poll.
Luis Erlenbusch holds the Wave's top listing at No. 42, followed by Tyler Schick at No. 58, Felix Ewers at No. 120 and Tim Ruetzel at No. 125.
In doubles, Akos Kotorman and Tim Ruetzel check in as the nation's 29th-ranked tandem.
THE BOORAS EFFECT
Head coach and director of tennis Mark Booras begins his 10th season at the helm of the program and has led Tulane to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Tulane has increased its final ITA team ranking each of the last six seasons, finishing No. 28 overall last spring. In addition to producing four straight singles All-America honorees, Booras was named the 2018 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and has been selected Louisiana Coach of the Year each of the last four seasons.
TOUGH TASKS AHEAD
Tulane will challenge a minimum of nine opponents that earned NCAA Tournament bids last spring, including Columbia, Florida State, Memphis, Mississippi State, Old Dominion, Tennessee, Texas, TCU and Texas Tech. Each of those teams finished the season ranked inside the top 40 of the ITA team rankings.
