Women's Tennis Earns Tight 4-3 Victory Over McNeese State
Jan 26, 2019 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's tennis team defeated McNeese State on Saturday afternoon, with junior Laura Fabrizi earning a close three-set win on court one to clinch the 4-3 win.
"Yeah it literally came down to points here and there but it was an incredible comeback from Laura [Fabrizi]. She was down by 5-1 again and came back in the third set and just played lights out," head coach Maria Brito said. "I'm very excited to see how much fight we have, we just have to do a better job at staying focused. We go in and out but I think the biggest thing is just that we have a lot of heart and a lot of fight."
The Green Wave started the day off strong, with junior Ivone Alvaro and senior Elena Muller along with Fabrizi and sophomore Alex Alegre each earning 6-2 victories in their doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage.
Freshman Adelaide Lavery was the first to finish in the singles competition, putting Tulane ahead 2-0 with a two-set victory over the Cowgirls on court six. Alvaro and sophomore Daniela La Fuente fell in their singles competitions, on courts two and four, respectively, to tie the score at 2-2.
Junior Christina Sisti fell just short of a three-set victory on court five before Muller pulled out the win on court three, once again evening the score at 3-3.
Down by one set, Fabrizi came back to tie it up 7-5 and force a third set, ultimately defeating McNeese State's Giovanna Fioretti with a 6-4 score in the deciding match.
The Green Wave are now 2-0 to start their spring season, preparing for a quick turnaround with a double-header matchup on Sunday. Tulane is set to face Southern University and Southeastern Louisiana at 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the City Park Tennis Center to finish out the weekend.Â
"We have a lot of work to do but were excited, tomorrow we have two matches and I'm pretty excited to see what they're going to come out and do," Brito added.
