Tulane Swimming and Diving Heads to Florida for Dual-a-Palooza Competition
Oct 17, 2019 | Women's Swimming and Diving
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane swimming and diving team heads to Miami in the hopes of making a splash at the 2019 Dual-a-Palooza competition.  This week's event will mark the team's third meet of the season, which is set to begin Friday at 3 p.m. and will conclude on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
Â
The competition will be comprised of 34 total events, where Tulane will face Rice, Denver, and FIU each in separate sessions. Defending Conference USA champion FIU will play host to the event this weekend.  Rice and Denver have had a strong starts to the season, as both teams enter the weekend undefeated.Â
Â
"I'm really impressed by the competitive level that the team consistently shows," head coach Leah Stancil said. "I harp on it a lot about being able to step up and compete, and that's really what I'm looking for - getting their hands on the wall first or getting their hand on the wall in a strategic fashion."
Â
Despite Tulane's recent fall to conference-rival Houston, the team has had several strong individual showings this season.  The high-level of practice intensity and training sets Tulane up for success, as the team enters this weekend's meet with confidence.Â
Â
"The expectation is always racing and being able to step up on the block and compete," Stancil said. "I'm looking forward to them implementing what we've been practicing in our workouts.
Â
Junior Kate McDonald has played a leading role in Tulane's performance this season, with a victory in all three individual events against Houston.  McDonald won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.54), 200 breaststroke (2:17.51), and 200 IM (2:05.23), scoring a total of 27 points as an individual. McDonald also took first in two individual events at Tulane's first meet of the season against LSU.Â
Â
Sophomore Noa Heron and graduate student Valentina Gomez have helped lead the way, with victories against Houston in the 1650 freestyle (17:10.04) and 200 butterfly (2:05.53), respectively. Â
Â
Seniors Jordan Morling and Olivia Johnson also have showcased their fair share of strong performances this fall. Against Houston, Morling placed second in both the 200 backstroke (2:04.59) and 200 IM (2:07.85).  In Tulane's meet against LSU, Johnson took first in the 1000 freestyle (10:13.57) and second in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.80).
