HARAHAN, La. – No. 14 Tulane Bowling got off to a strong start at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational, going 4-1. The Green Wave knocked down 4,714 pins, averaging 188.56 pins per game. Tulane's day-one pin total places it 6th of 16 teams.
"I'm pleased with how today went. Of course it would be nice to go 5-0, but 4-1 is acceptable," said Head Coach Hayley Veitch. "We shot over 900 every set and we just really had fun today. We had our low points, but we bounced back. The team dynamic is fantastic."
Tulane put on an impressive performance in its first match of the day, beating Valparaiso 953-892. The Wave recorded its best individual game of the day against the Crusaders, knocking down 246 pins in game four.
In match two, Tulane outscored 13th ranked Lincoln Memorial 953-936. Although the Wave trailed the Railsplitters 341-359 after the first two games, the team soon found its footing. The Greenies strung together six strikes to close out game three and take the lead, which they would not surrender for the remainder of the match.
In match three, the Olive and Blue once again found themselves trailing early, falling behind in-state rivals Southern after two games. But the team demonstrated its resiliency, coming back to claim the win 916-849.
In match four, Tulane faced off against 19th ranked Alabama Birmingham. The Wave trailed the Blazers by 58 pins after three games, but the squad remained unfazed by the deficit, as all five starters recorded a strike to open game four. Junior Madison McCall then iced the game by closing out the 10th frame with three straight strikes. In the end, Tulane would beat UAB 938-895.
The team's perfect record came to a close against Jackson State. Despite putting up their highest match total of the day, the Wave could not power past the Tigers who won the high-scoring affair 1011-954.
Fifth ranked Sam Houston State leads all teams with 4,901 total pin-fall. The Bearcats are averaging 196.04 pins per game. No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 8 North Carolina A&T, No. 17 Louisiana Tech, and No. 3 Stephen F. Austin round out the rest of the top-five.
"We left a lot out there and tomorrow should be an even better day for us," remarked Veitch.
Tulane will return to action tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. for traditional play. The teams will compete in five traditional matches on Saturday, and the cumulative pin-fall from days one and two will determine the seeding for Sunday's bracket. Â
