HARAHAN, La. – No. 14 Tulane Bowling faced an uphill battle on day two of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational. The Wave went 1-4 on the day while recording 4,409 total pin-fall and 176.36 average pin-fall. The team's cumulative record moves to 5-5 while their overall pin-fall and average pin-fall move to 9,123 and 182.46, respectively. Tulane will be seeded 10th heading into Sunday's bracket.
"It wasn't through a lack of trying that we didn't perform. It was just a rough day. Our execution wasn't as good. We got a little lost in the transition and it affected our spares, but we get to start fresh again tomorrow," remarked head coach Hayley Veitch.
The Wave got off to a slow start on Saturday, dropping its first four matches of traditional play. The Wave knocked down a tournament-low 824 pins against Tusculum, while the opposing Pioneers knocked down 928 in the first match of the day.
Some veteran leadership from the squad's only two upperclassmen helped buoy the team in match seven. Senior Isabelle Lee and junior Madison McCall opened the match against third ranked Stephen F. Austin with two strikes each, setting the tone for the rest of the squad. Despite the team's overall improved performance, Tulane fell to SFA 878-937.
The Olive and Blue then squared off against Texas Southern in match eight. The hosts were outscored by the Tigers 871-835. Then in match nine, Tulane fell to eighth ranked North Carolina A&T 876-924.
Despite their struggles, the team was able to end the day on a high note, beating neighboring Grambling State 997-608. In addition to being the Wave's only win of the day, their performance against the Tigers marked their highest pin-fall of the weekend. The Greenies' strong performance was anchored by freshman Amelia Vasquez who put up six strikes in a row to finish with 210 and Lee who put up seven strikes in a row to finish with 257. Lee's performance against the Tigers ties her career-best which she set against St. Francis on November 18, 2017.
"The team was finally relaxed in the last game so they were able to execute better shots and find a rhythm," said Veitch of the match against Grambling. "I'm very happy for [Isabelle] to finish on a high note. She really deserves it. She can repeat shots like no one I've seen before."
Vasquez led the team with 945 total pin-fall and 189 average pin-fall per game. Vasquez's performance placed her 24th of 129 competitors. Lincoln Memorial's Mary-Kate Kersting led all bowlers with 1,132 total pin-fall and 226.4 pin-fall per game. Sam Houston State University enters Sunday's bracket as the number one seed. The Bearcats knocked down a tournament-high 9,702 pins for a per-game average of 194.04.
Tulane will return to action tomorrow morning at 8:25 for three best 4-out-of-7 baker matches. The 10th seeded Wave will face off against the 9th seeded Jackson State Tigers. Following the bracket, there will be an awards ceremony to crown the tournament champions and all-tournament team.
