Oct 26, 2019 | Sailing
GALVESTON, Texas – The Tulane sailing team finished first among seven teams in the 2019 SEISA Coed Championship, winning nine races on Saturday to pull away from Texas in a tight finish to ultimately earn the victory on the water.
"The racing was tight today and we never seemed to be able to shake ourselves clear of Texas," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We made several unforced errors that kept our opponents close much longer than we would have liked. Fortunately, we were able to get some points back at the very end to take the top spot for the event. Now we will shift our focus to the women competing tomorrow. We feel confident that if we can learn from today's lessons that we can come out on top, and that's just what we'll aim to do."
The Green Wave totaled 27 points in nine races, defeating Texas (27), Texas A&M (45), Texas A&M Galveston (46), Central Oklahoma (72), Loyola (87) and Texas A&M Corpus Christi (90).
Freshman skipper Quinn Keenan, alongside crews Josie Larkin and Katie Cartiglia, finished second in the A Division boat, totaling 18 points to fall only to Texas. The group won the first two races of the day, totaling four first-place finishes in the competition.Â
In the B Division boat, senior skipper Caelan Watts sailed with crew Lydia Brown to total an impressive eight points in the regatta. The two recorded five victories, earning second-place finishes in the two remaining races in the day.
The Green Wave are set to head back out on the water on Sunday, sailing in the 2019 Women's SEISA Championship at Texas A&M Galveston.
