Sailing's Asher Zittrer Leads Snipe World Championship

ILHABELA, Brazil – Tulane sailing skipper Asher Zittrer is currently leading the 2019 Snipe World Championship after an opening day of action in Ilhabela, Brazil.
"We are super happy and proud of Asher to be representing the USA and Tulane at the Snipe Class World championship," head coach Charles Higgins said. "The snipe is a boat that is quite similar to what we sail in college, and is known around the world as one of the most competitive classes anywhere."
Storms on the water allowed only one race to open the regatta on Tuesday, which features 70 teams from 11 different countries.
Zittrer, alongside crew Watt Duffy, stands in first-place ahead of boats from Japan, Brazil, the United States, Uruguay and Argentina in the top 10.
The boats head back on the water on Wednesday, planning to sail 10 total races from then until Saturday.
"Simply to have qualified for the world championship is a statement and honor in and of itself," Higgins added. "Asher obviously had a terrific first day and I hope he can continue that level of success for the rest of the championship."
