NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's basketball came up short to Tulsa by an 80-57 count in American Athletic Conference play Thursday night at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
The Green Wave (4-19, 0-11 AAC) returned home on Thursday after playing three of their last four games on the road. Thursday night's matchup also marked the debut of the team's Mardi Gras-inspired alternate uniforms to celebrate the Carnival season.
"We had some really good looks that we just did not make," head coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr. said. "We can't get beat on 50-50 balls and that really hurt us in the early going."
Tulane struggled from the floor for much of the night, as it shot just 27.6 percent from the floor, while Tulsa (15-11, 5-7 AAC) connected at a 44.4 percent clip.
Despite the Green Wave's tough shooting night, sophomore Caleb Daniels, senior Jordan Cornish and freshman Connor Crabtree each finished in double figures, finishing with 13, 12 and 11 points respectively.
Daniels' team-high 13 points marked the 10th time this season in which he has led the team in scoring.
Cornish's performance marked the fifth straight game in which he had finished in double figures, while Crabtree scored in double figures for the second straight game after a 17-point effort at Wichita State last Saturday.
Redshirt junior Samir Sehic led the Green Wave with 11 rebounds, while Cornish tied a career high with eight boards. As a team, Tulane was outrebounded 46-36.
Tulane hung tough with Tulsa for much of the first half, as the opening 20 minutes of the game saw eight lead changes and five ties. The Green Wave led by one point (19-18) with 4:55 to go until the break, but Tulsa would respond in a big way with a 16-5 run to close out the first half.
Coming out of the locker room, Tulane struggled to get its offense going and would go on to trail by 20 points with just under 12 minutes to go in the game. The Green Wave would get no closer than 18 for the remainder of the contest.
"We just have to come back to practice to try and get better," Cornish said.
Tulane returns to New Orleans to host No. 9/9 Houston on Sunday, February 17. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m., at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse and the game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
