NEW ORLEANS – Time to go win some titles.
The Green Wave track and field team will compete in the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex, looking to make some noise in the conference as the indoor season comes to an end.
Live results will be available online, and the conference is streaming video of the meet live through Facebook.
Action is set to begin Friday morning with the pentathlon. Pauline Helm will be competing in that event for the Green Wave.
On Friday afternoon, the rest of the events get started. The mile run trials start things on the track at 12:25 p.m., and that is followed by trials of the 60-meter hurdles, 60-meter dash, the 400, 800 and 200. At 3:30 p.m., the 5K runs will go off, and the night concludes with the distance medley relays at 5 p.m.
In the field Friday, the long jump, pole vault and weight throw will be held starting at 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., respectively.
Saturday, field events kick off at 9:45 a.m. with the high jump and continue with the triple jump at 11 a.m. and the shot put at 12:30 p.m.
On the track, event finals begin at 11:20 a.m. with the mile. That is followed by the 60-meter hurdles, 60-meter dash, the 400, 800 and 200 at 1:20 p.m. The afternoon ends with the 3K at 1:40 p.m. and the 4x400 relays at 2:40 p.m.
Last season in Birmingham, Tulane finished seventh as a team with a score of 41 points. Brandi Hughes won the 60-meter hurdles as a sophomore this year, setting a personal best and breaking the school record that still stands in a time of 8.34 seconds. Hughes, Jessica Duckett (60 hurdles) Lauren Bartels (5K) and Rebekah Markel (pole vault) were all selected to the league's All-Conference Team for finishing in the top three of their event.
This year, Tulane has several athletes who would be in position to score in their events at the conference meet.
Rebekah Markel has the top pole vault clearance in the league so far this season with a height of 4.33 meters (14-2.5), a school record and a height that puts her 12th in the nation this season. Nastja Modic and Alex Potts could also be in position to score in the pole vault with their clearances of 3.92 meters (12-10.25), good for seventh in the league.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Tulane has two active athletes in the top eight in the league: Hughes and Kyah Loyd. Hughes' time of 8.40 this season is second-fastest in the league, and Loyd's 8.47 seconds is fifth in the conference.
In the triple jump, Trina Malej is sixth in the league with a distance of 12.49 meters (40-11.75). Aldrianna Dupree is eighth in conference in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.49 seconds, and Maya Harewood's 55.43 in the 400 is also eighth in the league.
Following this weekend's meet, members of the Green Wave team will have the opportunity to continue their season at the NCAA Indoor Championship on March 8-9, also in Birmingham at the CrossPlex. To qualify for the national championship, a student-athlete must have one of the top 16 times or marks in the country in her event.
