Feb 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's tennis team heads continues its string of road matches and closes out the month of February with contests at Samford and UAB this weekend.
Â
The Green Wave (4-6) will play at Samford on Saturday, February 23 at noon, before making a quick turnaround to face UAB the following day at the same time.
Â
SCOUTING SAMFORD
The Bulldogs (5-4) own a 4-2 record on their home courts this season and are coming off a 4-1 home win over inner-city rival UAB on Thursday afternoon. Grace Jennnings owns a 5-4 mark at No. 1 singles, while Mary Katherine Lewis is the only unbeaten player on the team with a 3-0 ledger at the No. 6 spot.
Â
SCOUTING UAB
The Blazers (3-6) enter Sunday's match with losses in four of their last five matches and will be hosting just their second home contest of the spring season. UAB's top doubles tandem of Marlene Herrmann and Alex Shchipakina own a 4-2 record at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Tulane dropped a pair of road matches in the state of Texas last weekend, falling 7-0 at No. 22 Texas Tech, before another 7-0 setback at American Athletic Conference foe SMU.
Â
IN THE ITA RANKINGS
In the latest Oracle/ITA national rankings released on February 20, the doubles duo of Ivone Alvaro and Elena Muller were listed at No. 25 nationally. It marks the first time a doubles tandem has been ranked in the poll under second-year head coach Maria Brito.
Â
THE DOUBLES POINT
Tulane has won the doubles point in five of 10 matches this season. The Green Wave's lone victory while not securing the point came in the season opener against Northwestern State, where Tulane walked away with a 4-3 victory.
Â
5-STAR SIGNEES
Head coach Maria Brito and assistant coach Keri Wong have left their imprints on the recruiting trail since their arrival, and their efforts paid off in a big way in November during the NCAA Early Signing Period. The Green Wave reeled in two 5-star recruits according to tennisrecruiting.net with the additions of Lahari Yelamanchili and Mackenzie Clark.
Â
Yelamanchili is the No. 1 ranked player in Illinois and the No. 50 overall player in the class of 2019, while Clark is a Morristown, N.J. native who trains in College Park, Md., ranking No. 3 in the state and No. 77 nationally.
