NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane track and field teams will split up this weekend, with most of the team heading west to New Mexico to take part in the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Friday and Saturday while a small group of distance runners head to Nashville, Tennessee, for the Music City Challenge on Saturday.
Live video from Albuquerque will be available at a cost through FloTrack. Live results can also be found online for free.
An incredible competitive meet, the Don Kirby Elite will see Tulane face off against opponents from 29 other Division I schools including seven members of the Pacific-12 Conference and three members of the top 25: No. 6 Oregon, No. 8 New Mexico and No. 17 Stanford.
On Friday, the Green Wave will begin their competition in the field at 7 p.m. with the high jump, but the majority of Tulane athletes will participate in Saturday's action. The 60-meter and 60-meter hurdles, the triple jump and pole vault will all be held on Saturday.
Tulane will also be sending four distance runners to compete at the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt on Saturday.
Live results will be available from Nashville through CFPI Timing.
Out in Nashville, Tom Coe will run in the mile, Emma Newton and Mckenzie Melius will race in the women's 3K, and Evans Kipchumba will take on the men's 3K. The women's 3K will run at 4:25 p.m., while the men's event will be held right after at 4:40 p.m. Coe's run in the mile will start the day at 11:15 a.m.
At last week's LSU Bayou Bengal, Rebekah Markel had the greatest pole vault performance in school history when she cleared 4.32 meters (14-2) to win the event and break the indoor school record. Markel had never previously cleared 4.15 meters indoors, and she eclipsed that height three times by clearing 4.16 meters, 4.27 meters and 4.32 meters.
Tulane had 11 other top-five finishes at the meet and posted three other new entries into the program's top 10 all-time.
Following their time in New Mexico, the Green Wave will return closer to home next weekend with the LSU Twilight meet. Competition in Baton Rouge will take place February 15.
