
Baseball Opens Series With UC Riverside Friday

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team welcomes another team from the Big West Conference this weekend, opening a three-game series against the UC Riverside Highlanders Friday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

First pitch for Friday's game is set for 6:30 p.m. in New Orleans, with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games will be live streamed at TulaneGreenWave.com, with Todd Graffagnini providing play-by-play on WRBH 88.3 FM locally in New Orleans.

The Green Wave will welcome fans of the New Orleans Baby Cakes to Friday's game, as season ticket holders can get free tickets and popcorn for the opener. Sport your favorite green on Sunday for St. Patrick's Day, with Riptide's Kids Club members getting access to the game and the inflatable park.

Tulane comes into the series against the Highlanders with an 11-6 record after earning a 9-3 win over the McNeese State Cowboys on Tuesday night, improving the team's record at home to 8-5 on the season and snapping a three-game losing skid in the process.

The offense bruised an opposing team's pitching staff for another game, producing all nine runs on 11 hits with five of those hits for extra bases against the Cowboys. Tulane is batting .314 as a group with six everyday starters fielding a .300 or better batting average so far this season.

Junior Kody Hoese's .370 batting average leads the team, as he and senior Trevor Jensen are tied for the team lead in hits with 27. Nine different players have double-digit hits for the team this season, as sophomore Frankie Niemann is the newest to that list after he went 4-for-4 against the Cowboys with three RBI and a run scored and has earned seven hits in his last three outings.

It was the sixth time this season that Tulane pitching has held an opponent to fewer than four runs in a game, with Trent Johnson tying for the staff lead in wins in earning his second of the year after allowing just one run in three innings.

The Green Wave will forge into this weekend against the Highlanders with their regular rotation of Kaleb Roper Friday, Keagan Gillies Saturday and Chase Solesky on Sunday. Roper will be looking to earn his second win of the year, while Gillies and Solesky are both looking to eye their first of the season.

UC Riverside comes into he series with a 6-11 overall record, dropping their last five games in a row. Last weekend the Higlanders a pair of games against Rider and San Francisco, and when coupled with a midweek loss to San Diego last Tuesday, UCR has won four of their last nine contests.

The series is the first between the two sides since 2015, as Tulane is 5-2 all-time against UC Riverside.
