Men’s Basketball’s Season Ends in First Round of American Championship

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 12 seed Tulane men's basketball team's 2018-19 season came to an end in an 83-68 defeat against host and No. 5 seed Memphis in the first round of the Air Force Reserve American Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday evening.

Sophomore Caleb Daniels scored 19 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds, while senior Blake Paul also reached double-figures with 12 points and six boards.

Redshirt freshman Shakwon Barrett added six points, five rebounds, four steals and tied for a game high with seven assists off the bench.

Memphis (20-12) was led by Jeremiah Martin's 21 points and seven assists, as Mike Parks Jr., compiled a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kyvon Davenport also scored 17 points.

The Green Wave (4-27) were aggressive from the opening tip, staying in attack mode offensively as Daniels scored the team's first seven points. Both sides continued to exchange blows through the first 10 minutes of action, as a Moses Wood trey tied things for the fifth time at 24-all.

Memphis took control from that point however, building its first double-digit lead of the day, 38-28, on a 3 by Kareem Brewton with five minutes left in the first half.

The Tigers would keep the margin over 10 for the remainder of the period before taking a 52-38 advantage into halftime.

Tulane shot an impressive 15-for-29 (.517) overall in the opening 20 minutes, but Memphis shot 18-for-33 (.545) from the field and 8-for-17 (.471) beyond the 3-point arc while assisting on 16 of their 18 baskets with just five turnovers.

Memphis extended its lead over 20 for the first time, 60-40, just two minutes into the second half as part of a 6-0 scoring run that gave the home team its largest lead – 23 points – with 16:35 left in the game.

The Green Wave were able to cut the deficit to 11 when a Shakwon Barrett 3-pointer with 3:47 left made it 77-66. After the final media timeout, Barrett forced a turnover and tapped the loose ball ahead to Connor Crabtree who finished a layup to cap a 7-0 run and pull the Wave within nine.

Tulane would draw no closer however, as Memphis extended its advantage back into double digits before the clock ran out.
