Track & Field Wins Four Events, Places 18 in Top Five in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE – The Green Wave track & field teams posted four event victories and 18 top-five finishes at the Louisiana Classics for their second meet of the outdoor season on Friday and Saturday.
Kyah Loyd dominated the 100 hurdles, winning the race in a time of 13.93 seconds. That time was more than four tenths of a second ahead of the second-place finisher. Pauline Helm was 18th in 15.35 seconds
Bridgid Selfors also had a large margin of victory, with hers coming in the 5K, She finished the race in 18:57.22, beating out the second-place finisher by more than a full minute. That second place finish went to Green Wave teammate Nicole Phaneuf who crossed the finish line in 20:04.63.
Tom Coe got his second win this outdoor season, this time winning the 1500 with a time of 4:03.53. Evans Kipchumba was third in 4:08.53, Carlos Zervigon was fifth in 4:09.41 and Pierce Hill was seventh in 4:11.86.
On the women's side of the 1500, Emma Newton, Mckenzie Melius and Jennifer LaMori went 3-4-5, representing the Green Wave well with three top-five finishes in a single event. Newton's time of 4:40.35 was a new personal best for the senior, breaking her old mark by just over half a second. Melius was fourth in 4:43.50, bettering her previous best by two full seconds. LaMori crossed the finish line in 4:46.42.
Later in the 800, the three placed right next to each other yet again. Melius took 11th in 2:24.43 while Newton was 12th in 2:25.85 and LaMori was 13th in 2:27.25. Paige Fatland also took part in the 800, placing 21st in 2:30.11.
Coe had another great race at that distance, taking fourth in 1:56.91 while Kipchumba was 29th in 2:09.18 Zervigon was 33rd in 2:09.18 and Hill was 35th in 2:10.82.
Aldrianna Dupree added another top-five finish for Tulane by placing third in the 100. Dupree ran the race in a time of 11.93 seconds. Maya Harewood was ninth in 12.21 seconds and Danielle Wember was 31st in 13.42 seconds.
Rebekah Markel had a strong beginning to her senior year's outdoor campaign, winning the pole vault as one of just two jumpers to clear 4.02 meters (13-2.25). Markel got over the height on her first attempt while Stephen F. Austin's Madison Pecot needed two attempts to get over, breaking the tie between the two of them and giving Markel the win.
Nastja Modic was fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.67 meters (12-0.5) while Megan Fitzgerald and Rose Brutkiewicz tied for ninth by clearing 3.37 meters (11-0.75) on their first try.
Also taking fourth in a field event was freshman Olivia Hicks in the high jump. She got over 1.52 meters and 1.57 meters on her first try, then cleared the bar at 1.62 meters (5-3.75) on her final attempt to separate herself from the fifth-place finisher. Emma King got over 1.52 metres (4-11.75) to take seventh.
Louise Jones ran the 400 hurdles for the first time in her Tulane career, taking seventh place in 1:06.48.
Kyla Denwood threw the discus for the second time this season, taking 12th place with a distance of 36.10 meters (118-5).
Danielle Wember competed for the first time this season, reaching a distance of 5.13 meters (16-10) in the long jump for 11th place.
In the 400, Kyra Ness-Lanckriet was the Green Wave's top finisher with a 10th-place showing in 58.54 seconds, setting a new personal best by more than half a second. Oneke Gwan was 15th in 59.28, a time .29 seconds faster than her indoor best from this year.
Ian Valdez ended the night for the men by placing ninth in the 5K with a time of 16:10.81. Jamie Polakoff was 15th in 16:40.75.
For the women, the 4x400 team of Gwan, Helm, Ness-Lanckriet and Jones came in fifth with a time of 3:58.98.
On Friday, the 200-meter dash saw the Green Wave take third through sixth place with Tahja Mitchell leading the pack in a time of 24.71 seconds. Aldrianna Dupree was right behind her in fourth in 24.74 seconds, and Maya Harewood rounded out the top five wit ha time of 24.81 seconds. Kyah Loyd was sixth in 25.14.
Also competing in the 200 were Brandi Hughes and Kyra Ness-Lanckriet who took 18th and 20th place with times of 25.72 and 25.84 seconds, respectively. Pauline Helm was 56th in 27.87 seconds.
Skyler Guillot got the afternoon started for the Green Wave, reaching 36.38 meters (119-4) in the javelin to place ninth in the field.
Later in the javelin on the men's side, James Thomas Watson reached 51.79 meters (169-11), placing seventh in the event.
Tulane will continue its season next weekend at the Victor Lopez Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The meet will be hosted by Rice.
