Mar 4, 2019 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane women's basketball ended its regular season with an 80-65 defeat at the hands of Cincinnati at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse on Monday afternoon.
With the regular season complete, Tulane (15-14, 5-11 American Athletic Conference) will next compete in the American Athletic Conference Tournament at the end of the week.
Tulane will not know its opponent in the tournament until Monday evening after the rest of the league's games have been completed. The Green Wave can now be ranked anywhere from ninth to 12th in the conference and will play a first-round matchup on Friday in Uncasville, Connecticut at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Cincinnati (20-9, 12-4) made things difficult for Tulane all afternoon Monday, earning 12 steals and forcing 24 Green Wave turnovers. For its part, Tulane shot poorly from the field in the first half to a tune of just 21 percent and could not catch up in the second half despite shooting much better.
Despite the teams having an equal number of offensive rebounds at 16 apiece, Cincinnati capitalized on them the most. The Bearcats recorded 25 second-chance points in the game while Tulane managed just 8.
With Cincinnati leading 32-21 at halftime, the Bearcats began the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 39-21 lead and force a Green Wave timeout. Tulane never got closer than 13 points after that.
Tatyana Lofton led the Green Wave with 15 points and also grabbed seven rebounds while leading the team with two steals. Krystal Freeman just missed out on a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, and freshman Dynah Jones reached double-figure scoring as well with 12 points. Kaila Anderson earned a team-best five assists.
During the game, Freeman earned her 250th career rebound.
Next up for the Green Wave is a trip to Uncasville, Connecticut, for the American Athletic Conference Tournament. First round action begins on Friday at a time to be determined at Mohegan Sun Arena. Tulane will know its opponent and tournament seeding after Monday night's games.
