Gulum Earns NTCA All-American Honors
Apr 10, 2019 | Women's Bowling
WICKLIFFE, Ohio – In her final season as a member of the Tulane Green Wave bowling team, senior Tiera Gulum has been honored as a National Tenpin Coaches Association All-American Honorable Mention the organization announced Wednesday night at its annual banquet ahead of the national championship this weekend.
The honor is the first for Gulum as she is the third Tulane bowler in program history to be recognized by the NTCA, as it's the fifth honor for a Green Wave bowler all-time. She joins Michelle Ng who earned NTCA All-America honors three times during her career, and current teammate Madison McCall who earned the distinction last year.
Tulane has now had a bowler earn NTCA honors in each of the last four years.
Gulum, hailing from Schenectady, New York, put a cap on her stellar career in 2018-19 by leading the Green Wave in total pins with 9,294, for an average of 202.04 in 46 individual matches on the season. This season she was named to the Southland Bowling League All-Conference Second Team, ending the year with a 209.00 average at the league's annual bowling championships.
On the season, Gulum rolled games of 200 or better 26 times, including having a run seven-straight to end the year. She helped the Green Wave post seven top-10 finishes and two in the top five.
At the Sam Houston State Track Kat Klash last November in Houston, Gulum finished fourth individually with over 1,000 pins knocked down and an average of 213.0. In a challenging field in Pennsylvania in January, she earned her second all-tournament team nod by finishing 13th at the KU Invitational where Tulane went 9-2 in the event.
It paled in comparison to the performance she produced on February 9 at the Sunshine State Winter Classic in Orlando, Florida, as she became the first bowler in Green Wave program history to roll a 300 game against Stephen F. Austin. She breezed past her previous career high game of 257 in 2017, as that game helped push Tulane into the top five of the tournament where they would eventually finish eighth overall as a group.
At the SBL Championship, She rolled a 204 in a close loss to SFA but battled back to post a 212 to help the team advance by knocking off Valparaiso. Unfortunately, the team wouldn't have enough to get past the Ladyjacks the next day, as on her final roll she posted a strike to finish with a 211.
