
Women’s Tennis Meets SMU in First Round of 2019 American Conference Championship

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
NEW ORLEANS – Seeded 11th in the tournament draw, the Tulane women's tennis team heads to Orlando, Fla., to begin postseason play against sixth-seeded SMU in the first round of the 2019 American Athletic Championships. First serve is set for 11 a.m. (CT) at the USTA National Campus.
With a win, the Green Wave (10-13) will face No. 3 seed Houston in Thursday's quarterfinal round at 11 a.m.
SCOUTING SMU
The Mustangs (9-11) enter Wednesday's match with two straight wins and in five in their last seven matches to close out the regular season. SMU's top singles player, Vivienne Kulicke, holds a No. 121 national ranking to complement her 22-8 overall and 10-5 dual match records. The Mustangs' top doubles tandem of Tiffany Hollebeck and Karina Traxler is 13-4 overall and 9-3 this spring, including a 7-2 mark at the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The Mustangs earned a 7-0 home win on April 17 in Dallas, claiming the doubles point and winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Tulane makes its fifth all-time appearance in The American Championship and owns a 3-4 record in the tournament. The Green Wave are 3-0 all-time in first-round matchups in The American, but 0-4 in the quarterfinals.
LAST TIME OUT
Tulane closed out the regular season by splitting a pair of matches in Charleston, South Carolina. The Green Wave defeated Charleston Southern on April 7, but dropped a 4-2 decision at the College of Charleston the following afternoon.
IN THE ITA RANKINGS
In the latest Oracle/ITA national rankings released on April 16, the doubles duo of Ivone Alvaro and Elena Muller are listed at No. 62 nationally. The duo owns a 17-4 overall record and a 15-3 mark at the top spot in the lineup this spring. Their season-high ranking was No. 25 on February 20.
THE DOUBLES POINT
Tulane has won the doubles point in 14 of 23 matches this season. The Green Wave's two victories while not securing the point came in the season opener against Northwestern State, where Tulane walked away with a 4-3 victory, and again on April 3 against Nicholls State.
5-STAR SIGNEES
Head coach Maria Brito and assistant coach Keri Wong have left their imprints on the recruiting trail since their arrival, and their efforts paid off in a big way in November during the NCAA Early Signing Period. The Green Wave reeled in two 5-star recruits according to tennisrecruiting.net with the additions of Lahari Yelamanchili and Mackenzie Clark.
Yelamanchili is the No. 1 ranked player in Illinois and the No. 50 overall player in the class of 2019, while Clark is a Morristown, N.J. native who trains in College Park, Md., ranking No. 3 in the state and No. 77 nationally.
