Tulane’s Kody Hoese Named Semifinalist For Dick Howser Trophy
May 16, 2019 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – A day after being selected for one of amateur baseball's top prizes, junior Kody Hoese has been nominated for one of college baseball's top awards as on Thursday afternoon he was named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced.
Hoese is the fourth player in Tulane history to be named a semifinalist for the award, and the first since Shooter Hunt was named to the list in 2008. Hunt was also named to the preseason watch list that year, as Brian Bogusevic and James Jurries were both selected as semifinalists in 2005 and 2002, respectively.
Hoese is the only player from the American Athletic Conference to be selected to the list, as on Wednesday he was named a semifinalist for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award. He is one of four players making the list at third base, with 26 in all making the cut from across the country.
Hoese currently leads the Green Wave with a .403 batting average, producing 85 hits with 19 doubles, 23 home runs, 60 RBI and 67 runs scored, while slugging .820 with a .496 on-base percentage. If the season ended today, the batting average would be fifth in a single season at Tulane, with the slugging mark being second and 173 total bases sitting ninth.
His 23 home runs are currently joint tied for the most in the country, while also tying for the second-most for a player in a single season in program history. Hoese also ranks in the top 20 in the country in batting average, home runs per game, slugging percentage, runs per game, hits, runs, doubles and hits per game.
Hoese leads the squad with 26 multi-hit outings this year, including being the first of two players this year to have five hits in a game for the first time since 2013. He also leads the team with 17 multi-RBI contests, still holding the mark for the longest hitting streak on the team for a player at 19 games, while reaching base safely in 35 games at one point this year.
Just last weekend at Houston, Hoese produced his third multi-home run game of the season in a win over the Cougars, tying the school record for the most hit in a single game with three coming against Lamar.
This season alone, Hoese has twice been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, three times selected to the league's weekly honor roll, while also being the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week.
Both D1 Baseball and Perfect Game named Hoese to their Midseason All-American lists as a first team selection, as well as being a midseason addition to the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award watch list.
This is the 33rd year of the Dick Howser Trophy. The finalists will be announced on Thursday, June 6. The 2019 award will be presented at TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha, the home of the College World Series for the eighth year. The winner will be unveiled on MLB Network on Friday, June 14, and then, a press conference with the winner will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 10 a.m. (CDT), the opening day of the 2018 CWS.
The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager, who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
The award, given to the top player in collegiate baseball, is based on two rounds of national voting.
