2019 Schedule
NEW ORLEANS – Finishing the 2018 season with a 29-9 record after a postseason run earned the team a spot in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, the Tulane volleyball team looks forward to a 2019 schedule that features matchups against eight teams that ranked in last season's NCAA top 100 RPI, head coach Jim Barnes announced Thursday.
"Our primary objective with the non-conference portion of this 2019 schedule is the NCAA's,"Â Barnes said. "We will play winning teams that will be very challenging but they will give us a chance to be in position for an NCAA bid."
The Green Wave open preseason play with an exhibition matchup against NCAA Tournament participant Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m., before returning home to hold the team's annual Olive and Blue Scrimmage on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 5 p.m.
Heading back on the road for the I-10 Challenge at Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane is set to face Incarnate Word, UTEP and the Ragin Cajuns in its first competitions of the regular season on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30-31.
After hosting a mid-week matchup against Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m., Tulane stays in New Orleans to host the annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic from Friday to Sunday (Sept. 6-8). The Green Wave will face Missouri State on Friday at 6 p.m., Houston Baptist on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Ole Miss on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The following week holds two road matches for Tulane, as the team travels to city rival New Orleans on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. before heading to Western Kentucky for a two-day tournament on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 13-14). The Olive and Blue will match up against Ohio State on Friday at 1 p.m., before closing the weekend with competitions against Bowling Green at 11 a.m. and Western Kentucky at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The Green Wave are then set to close its non-conference portion of the schedule, hosting Southern Miss on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. before heading down the road to LSU for a Saturday match on Sept. 21.
"Our conference goal is to earn an American Athletic Conference championship," Barnes said. "We have nationally ranked teams at the top of our league, but we are ready for the opportunity. Our team gained a great deal of experience and confidence from our postseason wins and NIVC championship match. With four freshmen and two sophomores in the starting lineup from last year, we return a young, hungry team."
The 16-match American Athletic Conference portion of the schedule begins on Friday, Sept. 27 with a 7 p.m. home matchup against Memphis. Tulane also hosts SMU in its first league weekend at home, competing on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.
Staying in New Orleans to host Houston the following Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m., Tulane then splits the weekend and heads to UConn for its first conference road matchup on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. The Green Wave continue its action on the road the following weekend, with two matches at Tulsa and Wichita State on Friday, Oct. 11 and Sunday, Oct. 13, respectively.
The Green Wave will play four more matches in October, hosting Cincinnati and ECU on Oct. 18 and Oct. 20 before closing the month in Florida, with two competitions against USF and 2018 conference champion UCF, on Oct. 25 and 27.
