Sperry Women's Eastern Semifinals Results
NEWPORT, Rhode Island – The Tulane sailing team wrapped up action in the Sperry Women's Eastern Semifinals on Wednesday, totaling five top 10 finishes on the water to conclude the team's first of two national regattas.
"It was another day of tough conditions, but we showed solid improvement. Our A Division boat, Ciara with Amelia and Grace, had a terrific day posting all top ten finishes and moving up to eighth in their division," head coach Charles Higgins said.
Freshmen skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and crew Amelia Schofield got the team started off with a strong performance on day two, earning second and third place finishes in their first two A Division races of the day.
The two, alongside senior crew Grace Bloomfield, recorded 10 top 10 finishes out of the 13 races sailed over the two-day semifinals, earning a final eighth-place spot among 18 teams in the A Division.
That position proves to be impressive for first-year Rodriguez-Horan and Schofield, as Harvard is the only team to have finished ahead of Tulane that also had a freshman skipper.
Rodriguez-Horan, Schofield and Bloomfield totaled 110 points after 13 races over the two-day semifinals.
"In the B Division, we substituted Alanna in as a skipper to gain some more national level experience," Higgins said. "She and her crews, Josie, Kate and Sophie, steadily improved throughout the day."
Sophomore skipper Alanna Austin, alongside an alternating crew of junior Josie Larkin, sophomor Kate Lenhard and senior Sophie Ricker, sailed in the four remaining B Division races.
The four totaled 209 points after 13 total races to finish in 16th place. The Green Wave remained in 16th-place overall after a second day of competition solidified Tuesday's standings.
"While we certainly hoped to have performed a little better, I am very pleased with the progress we've made this season," Higgins said. "Our youth now will undoubtedly lead to more experience in the coming seasons."
Finishing the women's portion of the National Championship, the Tulane sailing team will now have a few days off before beginning competition in the Gill Coed Western Semifinal on Tuesday and Wednesday.
If the Green Wave earn a spot in the top nine teams among the 18 participating, they will advance to the final rounds of sailing on Thursday and Friday.
