HOUSTON – The Green Wave men's track & field team closed out its regular season with two event victories and two second-place finishes at the Tom Tellez Invitational on Friday night.
James Thomas Watson started the day off with a bang, winning the javelin with a throw of 54.48 meters (178-9). Watson's first throw of the day reached 53.06 meters, and that was plenty to get him into the event finals. On his sixth and final attempt, Watson reached 54.48 to give him the victory by nearly six full meters.
The 4x100 squad got the Green Wave its second win of the night, with Devin Glenn, Corey Dauphine, Jaetavian Toles and Jalen LaCour racing to a time of 41.39 seconds. That mark is just .09 seconds shy of their season best but was more than half a second better than second-place Trinity College on the night.
Tom Coe just missed out on the third Tulane victory of the night, coming up with a second-place finish in the 800. His time of 1:53.51 was more than two seconds faster than he had ever run that distance in a Green Wave uniform.
In the high jump, Jorien Vallien cleared 1.95 meters (6-4.75) for the second consecutive meet, tying his season best. That clearance was good enough for second place in the event.
Evans Kipchumba took fourth place in the 1500, crossing the finish line in 4:04.33 to set a new personal best by 1.15 seconds. Carlos Zervigon was sixth in 4:08.11 while Pierce Hill placed ninth in 4:16.48. Andrew Kipkemboi placed 12th in 4:19.89, Joshua Cheruyot was 14th in 4:22.75, Jamie Polakoff took 15th with a time of 4:24.74 and Ian Valdez claimed 17th place in 4:37.44.
In the 100 later in the night, LaCour won his heat with a time of 11.04 seconds. That earned him a 15th-place showing in the field overall. Toles was right behind him in 11.09 seconds for 16th place, just .04 off his personal best. Cameron Caroll claimed 21st place in 11.51 seconds.
In the 200, it was Toles who won his heat with a time of 22.11 seconds, placing 13th overall in the field. LaCour was 14th in 22.12 seconds, a mere hundredth of a second behind his teammate.
With the regular season now behind them, the Green Wave will focus on postseason races next week. Tulane starts is postseason with the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in Wichita, Kansas, on May 10-12 at Cessna Stadium.
