
Track & Field Looking for Medals at AAC Championship

NEW ORLEANS – The Green Wave track & field team will get a chance to put on some medals this weekend when it heads to Wichita, Kansas, for the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
The three-day meet begins on Friday and runs through Sunday at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State.
The first day of the competition will be home to the first four events of the heptathlon as well as the javelin in the field. On the track, trials for the 800, 200 and 400 hurdles will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. The 10K finals will end the night at 7:55 p.m.
Saturday's action begins with the conclusion of the heptathlon and continues on the field at 3 p.m. with the long jump and pole vault. Track races begin at 5:30 p.m. with the 100/110 hurdle trials and continue throughout the night with the 1500, 400 and 100 trials as well as the 3K steeplechase finals ending things at 7:45 p.m.
The meet concludes Sunday with the high jump and triple jump in the field beginning at 2:30 p.m. On the track, the 4x100 relay begins things at 4:30 p.m. That race will be followed by finals for the previous days' races along with finals of the 5K. The championships finish up at 7:45 p.m. with the 4x400 relays.
Heading into the conference meet, the Green Wave have 10 athletes with marks in the league's top eight and another five who currently have marks within four positions of scoring.
Emmanuel Rotich and Rebekah Markel enter the weekend with the top marks in the conference in the 3K steeplechase and pole vault, respectively. Markel is joined in scoring position in the pole vault by freshmen Alex Potts and Nastja Modic (fourth and fifth, respectively). The trio swept the podium at the conference indoor championships in Birmingham in February.
Kyah Loyd has the third-fastest 100 hurdles time in the conference heading into the meet, and Mckenzie Melius has the fifth-best steeplechase time on the women's side. Rotich is also fifth in the league in the 5K.
Tahja Mitchell and Maya Harewood enter the weekend with the sixth- and eighth-fastest 400 times, and James Thomas Watson has the sixth-best javelin distance. Olivia Hicks is eighth in the high jump.
On the outside with a chance to jump into a scoring position are Mitchell in the 200 (10th), Trina Malej in the triple jump (10th), Tom Coe in the 800 (11th), Skyler Guillot in the javelin (11th) and Jorien Vallien in the high jump (12th).
Following this weekend's meet, select members of the Green Wave track & field team will continue their season at the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Florida. The top 48 declared athletes in the region in each event will qualify for a spot at the regional meet.
Tulane currently has five athletes in qualifying position entering the conference championship weekend: Rotich, Markel, Potts, Modic and Loyd.
