
Incoming Bowling duo Fare Well at High School National Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Two soon-to-be members of the Tulane bowling team in signees Jenica Baron and Amelia Vasquez recently wrapped up competition at the 2019 U.S. High School Bowling National Championship in Indianapolis with a string of strong performances.

Competing for the final time with her high school team, Vasquez and her Oviedo High School Lions earned a seventh-place national finish at the team event, knocking down 4,456 pins as a group.

As one of the 28 teams to make the finals from the more than 3,100 that made the qualifying cut, Vasquez knocked down 616 pins to help put the Lions in the eighth spot as the field was cut from 28 to 16. The next day, the team moved up to seventh after knocking down 638 pins as the field was again cut from 16 to the top eight.

Unfortunately, the team's run came to an end in the cut from the top eight to the final four as Oviedo ended its year with a day three score of 536 to place seventh.

Moving on to the singles portion of the championship, with a qualifying cut of 771 the two opened individual play against the 216 left standing and after the first round of action on day one, Baron finished 11th while Vasquez finished 21st to move on to the second day of action featuring the top 70 bowlers remaining.

Baron had three games knocking down over 200 pins, with a 266 in the first round which was the highest for any bowler after round one. She then rolled games of 237, 201 and 192 to finish with a total pinfall off 896.

Vasquez rolled 200 games in each of the four opening-round games with scores of 214, 213, 219 and 204 to finish with a total pinfall of 850.

With just one game to determine the final eight, Vasquez shot up the leaderboard after rolling a 246 while Baron rolled a 194 to place 13th and 14th, respectively. Vasquez finished with a score of 1,096, with Baron ending the competition with a score of 1,090.
