Green Wave Summer Spotlight: Veronica Petrinec
Jul 24, 2019 | Women's Bowling
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane Athletics will be putting the spotlight on student-athletes from all sports during the summer months, as many of them work internships, travel the world and share their unique experiences.
Check back each week for a new edition featuring another Green Wave student-athlete!
This week's spotlight focuses on sophomore bowler Veronica Petrinec, who recently competed at the USBC Junior Gold Championship event in Detroit. The event is one of the biggest on the competition calendar for youth bowlers, as she was joined by teammates Madison McCall and Jenica Baron, who will be a freshman on the team for the 2019-20 season
Who: Veronica Petrinec
What: 2019 USBC Junior Gold Championship
When: July 2019
Where: Detroit, Michigan
1. You just finished competition at the USBC Junior Gold event in Detroit. Tell us what kind of competition it's like and what makes it a unique event to participate in over the summer?
Junior gold is a rigorous competition that is four days long containing four games each day for a total of sixteen days of qualifying. Being that it's a long tournament, it makes it easy for good and bad days of bowling to get in your head. What makes this tournament unique is it really challenges your mental game, your physical ability and your knowledge of the game. You bowl on four different patterns, and in four different bowling centers. Although it's challenging, it's a challenge most collegiate bowlers cannot wait to be a part of every summer!
2. You were able to compete while your teammates in Madison McCall and incoming freshman Jenica Baron were also active in the tournament. Tell us what it was like to know you had teammates there cheering you on and you cheering them on?
I was only able to compete with Madison McCall, Jenica is in the under 17 division so I didn't get a chance to compete with her. However, I did go watch Jenica and had the pleasure of cheering her on. I find that supporting your fellow teammates goes a long way. If you can support another teammate even after you are out of the cut it shows what kind of person you are. I learned a lot about myself just by being able to do so.
3. After competing in your first collegiate season at Tulane, what are you most looking forward to in the 2019-20 season?
I am mostly looking forward to seeing a change. I have never been a big fan of change, especially growing up. I think changing up a lot of what we do in practices, workouts, and team bonding will really help the chemistry of the team. We have three freshmen coming in, which is almost half the team. I think if we want to mesh and he successful we need some new strategies! I can't wait to see what's in store for that!
4. What have you enjoyed most about your Tulane experience after your first year in New Orleans?
I have enjoyed the relationships I have made with individuals in athletics, and outside of athletics. I have made many wonderful connections with my roommate, and academic advisor Meredith Krall. Making friends and having a support staff in athletics in people like Cornell Sneed and Clyde Verdin really make my experience at Tulane 100x better. Stepping away from bowling and still knowing my self-identity has showed me more about myself than I could have ever imagined. I cannot thank Tulane enough for giving me so many opportunities and new lifelong friends. Thank you to the New Orleans community for giving me a place I can call home! Thank you coach Hayley Veitch for making it possible!
