Men's Tennis Finishes Strong at Alabama
Sep 15, 2019 | Men's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Tulane men's tennis team finished its first fall tournament in dominant fashion, going 4-for-4 in singles play and winning its lone doubles match on Sunday at the Crimson Tide Four in the Fall at the University of Alabama.
Benji Jacobson and Dane Esses got the morning underway with a convincing 8-3 victory over a tandem from the University of South Alabama to win the consolation draw and finish the weekend with a 2-1 record.
That proved to be a sign of good things to come, as all four Green Wave singles players collected singles wins in the final batch of matches in the tournament. Esses defeated Oklahoma's Matt Stewart, 6-3, 6-4, to finish the weekend 2-2, before Benji Jacobson defeated Oklahoma's Matt Rodriguez, 6-1, in the first set before being forced to retire.
Tim Ruetzel also closed play with a 2-1 singles mark with a tough, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, victory over Finn Stodder from the University of Tennessee. Henry Lovett completed the weekend on a high note with his first collegiate singles win - a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, decision over Tennessee's Mason Meier.
Tulane continues the fall campaign next weekend, Sept. 20-22, for matches at the Battle at the Beach in Destin, Fla., as well as the South Carolina Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
