Men's Tennis Falls at No. 11 Stanford, 4-1
Jan 25, 2020 | Men's Tennis
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Junior Hamish Stewart scored perhaps the best singles win of his career, but the Tulane men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2020 spring season, 4-1, at 11th-ranked Stanford as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
The Green Wave (2-1) were unable to establish early momentum in doubles, as the Cardinal (2-0) cruised to a pair of wins on courts one and three, respectively, to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
Stanford put another point on the scoreboard with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles, but that's when the 90th-ranked Stewart struck with an upset victory at No. 2 singles. The Glasgow, Scotland native proved to be too much for 18th-ranked Alexandre Rotsaert, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph, to cut the Wave's deficit in half, 2-1.
For Stewart, the win was his eighth over a ranked opponent in his career, third of the season and the highest-ranked opponent he has ever defeated. His previous best was a win over the nation's No. 30 player last spring.
Tulane's momentum did not last long however, as Stanford closed out courts one and five, respectively, in straight sets to clinch the match and advance to Sunday's final against 13th-ranked California.
Tulane will face Miami (Fla.) at 4 p.m. (CT) in Sunday's third-place match.
