Bowling Heads to the Louisiana Tech Classic to Kick Off 2020-21 Season
Nov 5, 2020 | Women's Bowling
NEW ORLEANS – The No. 19 Tulane bowling team will hit the lanes for the first time in 2020-21 this weekend (Nov. 6-8) at the Louisiana Tech Classic in Ruston, Louisiana.
The Green Wave will be competing against four Southland Conference foes in No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Sam Houston State, No. 7 Stephen F. Austin and host No. 9 Louisiana Tech. The field will also be comprised of No. 21 UAB ad Prairie View A&M.
The Olive and Blue will kick off the season against Vanderbilt in the baker format. Tulane will also face tournament host Louisiana Tech and Prairie View A&M on Friday. The Green Wave will see Sam Houston State, UAB and Stephen F. Austin in the traditional format Saturday before moving to the best of seven on Sunday. The Green Wave will look to build off the 2019-20 season where they finished No. 19 in the final National Tenpin Coaches Association Coaches (NTCA) Poll. Tulane finished 53-49 overall in the 2019-20 season. Head coach Hayley Veitch will keep the expectations high this season.
"The expectations for this year are to make it to the NCAA Regional in April," Veitch. "We have plenty of time to prepare for that. It is going to be a process to get to that stage."
Tulane will be faced with a competitive slate of opponents this season while competing in the Southland Bowling League. Six of the league's teams were ranked in the NTCA Preseason Top 25 with the seventh team receiving votes. Along with the teams attending the Louisiana Tech Classic, Arkansas State brings a No. 3 ranking into the season, while Youngstown State enters the season ranked No. 10. Valparaiso was the only member not ranked in the preseason poll, but the Crusaders did receive votes.
Veitch knows the road will be tough, but she will not back away from the challenge.
"It doesn't scare me," Veitch. "I think it is good experience. My motto always is that if you can't make it against these teams, you are never going to make it to the Championship. Competing against these teams elevates our game and gets us competitive. It also shows us where we stand. The first two tournaments we are competing in we will get to see a lot of the Southland teams. We will be able to see where we are and what we need to do."
Senior Madison McCall returns as the most decorated member of the team. She earned All-Southland Second Team honors and was named an Honorable Mention NTCA All-American.
McCall led the Green Wave last season with 8,172 pins and a 20.01 frame average. She was 10th in the Southland Conference in frame average and posted the sixth-highest frame fill percentage at 86.4 percent. The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, native posted her highest finish of the season at the Mid-Winter Invitational as she placed third. McCall knocked down 1,108 pins for a frame average of 20.68 at the tournament. Veitch expects McCall to be the leader of her squad again this season.
"I expect Maddy to bring leadership from her position," Veitch said. "She has obviously been in collegiate bowling for the longest, so she can bring a stable mindset and educate the bowlers and guide them through each tournament as it goes."
Juniors Crystal Singh and Veronica Petrinec and sophomore Jenica Baron will also return for the Green Wave this fall. Freshmen Morgan Gitlitz and Yarelis Alvarez join the Olive and Blue for the 2020-21 season.
After the Louisiana Tech Classic, the Green Wave will finish the fall slate in Houston at the Track Kat Klash on Nov. 20-22. Tulane will open the spring season on Jan. 29-31 at the PVAM Invitational in Dallas. The Olive and Blue will then compete at the La Tech Tournament on Feb. 12-14 in Dallas and the Mid Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on Feb. 19-21, before closing the regular season in Smyrna, Tennessee, at the Music City Classic on March 5-7.
The Southland Bowling League Championship will be held on March 19-21 in Houston. Tulane will also serve as the host of the 2021 NCAA Championship Regional at Colonial Lanes in Harahan, Louisiana. The Green Wave are excited to have the regionals at the lanes they call home.
"I think hosting the regional is awesome motivation for us," Veitch said. "We couldn't have wished for any better year because we, obviously, didn't compete in our home tournament, so this is the next best thing. This gives us something to work hard for all year. We can definitely make it. No doubt about it. I think we are excited for this opportunity. If we keep progressing the way that we are, there is no reason why we shouldn't be there."
