
The Green Wave Fall Short Against Houston, 66-60, in Overtime

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women's basketball team fell short against Houston, 66-60, in overtime at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
"It was a game of runs for both teams," Green Wave head coach Lisa Stockton said. "I felt like we came out really on fire in the first quarter. Defensively I thought we really focused. In the second half, we probably weren't focused, and we gave up too many outside shots. We fought from behind though. I felt like when we tied it, we could get it."
Tulane (12-10, 7-2) and Houston (11-11, 4-4) were even in rebounds at 45 apiece. The Green Wave logged 15 assists on 19 made shots, nine blocks and 15 steals, while the Cougars had 18 assists on 21 made shots, 10 blocks and nine steals. Junior Sierra Cheatham led the Olive and Blue with 15 points and added six rebounds. Junior Krystal Freeman chipped in 14 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks. Sophomore Mia Heide logged seven points, 13 rebounds, three blocks and two assists for Tulane.
The Cougars opened the second half on an 11-2 run. The Green Wave stopped the run with layup from Cheatham, but Houston took a 42-35 lead after the third quarter.
Both teams traded baskets to open the fourth quarter then Tulane scored six straight points to cut the Cougars' lead to 46-45 with 5:46 left in the game. Houston responded with a corner three then Freeman knocked down two free throws to make the score 49-47 with 4:30 remaining in the game.
After trading buckets for two minutes, Tulane scored six in a row to take a 53-51 lead with 1:30 left. Houston hit two free throws to tie the game at 53 with 57 seconds remaining. Both teams had chances at the end of regulation, but neither could capitalize and the game went to overtime.
Houston opened overtime with a 7-0 run and Tulane was unable to take back the lead. Houston set the final score at 66-60 after free throws.
Sophomore Dynah Jones scored 14 points and senior Kayla Manuirirangi recorded eight points, four assists and five steals for the Olive and Blue
Tulane jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two threes from Cheatham and one from Manuirirangi. The Cougars cut the score to 15-10 then the Green Wave closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 22-10 lead into the second quarter.
After trading buckets to start the second quarter, Houston went on an 11-0 run to cut the score to 29-24 at halftime.
At the half, Cheatham led the Olive and Blue with eight points, while Heide had a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks. Tulane logged 18 rebounds, nine steals and eight assists in the first half.
Dymond Gladney led Houston with 29 points.
The Green Wave will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 4, as they travel to play Memphis.
